I just tried a free month today of Spotify premium after a few years of AM and am reasonably impressed. Think SQ better and search much much better. Not sure if I will junk AM, always airplay issues (drop outs), so far SP is behaving itself. Havent seen the widget, will go look!

Seems like lazy implementation to me. I mean - just a static app shortcut? Really?

"Our best engineers worked hard to implement this feature. It took months of coding and testing to add this butto... err, widget, and I couldn't be prouder of my company." - Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify

Been a spotify user for 13 years. Pretty happy with the app in general, but the speed of implementing new features is just terrible. I sometimes wonder where my money goes

Even the active widgets are terrible. The iPad still doesn’t have a calculator app. Apple can be a very frustrating company. The utter lack of customization of the widgets, especially sizing and positioning, makes them even worse. They’re incredibly limited in their functionality. Apple can do more. A lot more. The widgets were a very big thing they were pushing and they are very disappointing in real world usage.
Whether they're terrible or not is quite beside the point. They exist and Spotify didn't utilize them. That's on them and not Apple.

Well, I’ve added it. Makes it easier to get to one of my most used Apps.

Also added a Google Maps Widget next to it.

Handy.

Yeah it's literally faster to say "Hey Siri, play Pogo on Spotify". Don't need a button or to even look at the screen. Then you get the lockscreen player and the widget is superfluous.

And if they utilized all that Apple has to offer with their kit, it would still be terrible. That is the point.

That’s to play a specific song.

But if you just wanted to browse Spotify’s stations/your library, this shortcut avoids the need to swipe up & select the App.

Remember when people were wanting Apple to remove the need to swipe up to unlock? Well, having these widgets on the Lock Screen does that & also gets you to the App you need ASAP.

No that's to play a specific artist on shuffle or a playlist. I don't use stations so I don't know if it works there or not. But from a locked phone "Hey Siri, play [artist, podcast, or playlist] on Spotify" works without having to touch or look at the phone.

It's marginally faster to tap the widget unless you already have the screen widget, then it's the same amount of motion to unlock your phone as it is to tap the widget. It is bad utilization, hands down, but it's not Apple's fault they don't use it efficiently.

The key part of my point was that it was “specific”. Ie. You know exactly what you’re looking for & you have no need to browse the channel menus/library for something new.
Imagine knowing what you want to listen to on a music player before turning it on? I find it very bizarre that anyone would just turn something on random.

For your use case. Not everyones.
No in this case if you use the lockscreen widget, you probably already have the homescreen widget and have been using it since it's far more useful. In either case your time to open and operate by touch is the same.

I would go back to Spotify if there was a way to bring the Stats feature of AM with it. I think the algorithims are better, but I've been so used to Itunes stats the last 20 years it's hard to go to anywhere else. Also, how spotify deals with local files is kind of laughable, while in AM those local files are integrated in the overall library.
