I subscribe to both Spotify and Apple Music. I have found that both services have their own strength/weaknesses, but I do think Apple music has improved drastically in the past couple of years.

Yet Netflix charges more for better quality and people pay.
They can't even get people to pay for their own accounts. lol. It isn't even a good comparison to make either. Some stuff on Netflix is only available on Netflix. Most music is available on most (or all) streaming platforms.

If you don't care about lossless, it is $1 cheaper than Apple Music. If you want lossless, the article concludes it will be the same price as Apple Music. Some strange reactions about the pricing, especially since the up-charge for lossless will cost the same.

This is called, beating a dead horse. There really isn't much else they can do in terms of expansion.

The most obvious direction of expansion for Spotify is to become an advertising platform, but I think that ultimately dilutes the brand and the UX

Personally, I’ve moved to YouTube music.

Comes with YT Premium (which itself is a total game-changer), the audio quality is great, the catalogue has a lot of depth (I think it’s basically the same as Apple or Spotify, same deals with the same big labels), the recommendations are very good, and it has a lot of content you won’t find anywhere else, such as covers, indie artists, and live recordings.

I think Spotify invests a lot of the subscription revenue in podcasts. Personally that doesn’t really interest me.

Google need to do a better job of promoting it. The annoying ads in the YouTube app aren’t very good marketing, but the service is actually quite good.

Wow, finally happening, after being rumored for years...

That said, I probably won't switch from Qobuz, especially since I use Roon (which only works with Qobuz or Tidal). The last time I subscribed to Apple Music, it wouldn't let me favorite any streaming albums without uploading my entire home library to the cloud, so that was a dealbreaker for me.

Apple's lossless files are not quite lossless as they are mostly under 96hz. If Spotify can make all losslesses 192, then there could be demands, but it is highly unlikely that they could pull that off, so there is no reason to pay more than Apple Music, unless you feel that Spotify algorhythm is worth extra money. I don't feel that way, so I am staying Apple Music (plus it is not even really $10.99 as I subscribe to Apple One Premium)
Are you referring to 192khz sampling rate or bitrate? I’d be surprised if the DACs in Apple products support over 48khz and people would have to own a higher tier audio interface not only to convert 192 kHz but have a good enough clock for it to even sound better given clock jitter on cheaper audio interfaces.

I am Qobuz to Roon for my HiFi...but I only use Roon because Qobuz doesn't supporting casting to my RPI that connects to my DAC/Amp. I am clearly in the minority (by far) of home users due to my HiFi setup - but if Spotify can come CLOSE to the quality of Qobuz and pass through native files it will eliminate 2 services from my stack, and I am all in.

Indeed. And they even throw in the audiobooks as a bonus for the lower tier. Not sure what people are compaining about.

For me personally, Spotify at the "very high" quality setting sounds plenty good.

I hope they keep the name Supremium for the higher tier.

No way, the user experience of Apple Music isn’t anything remotely close to that of Spotify. Completely blows Apple Music out of the water in user interface, official podcasts, music algorithms and more…

Despite having knowledge of my music library since back when it was iTunes, and having only used Spotify off and on a few times over the years, Spotify consistently fills nearly the entire main page with music I might actually listen to.

Apple only promotes what they want to promote, almost entirely pop and rap, neither of which (especially modern) do I want to hear. Despite knowing exactly what is in my music library.

YouTube Music, despite explicitly asking me to choose which artists I like, and after selecting dozens of them, still doesn’t seem to care and also tends to promote whatever they want.

This is a great example of how when a company does one thing they should do it better than companies for which that is one of several different focuses.

But with how much and how proudly Apple has been involved in music for the last several decades, I would expect them to do better.

But that’s kind of Apple’s style. Rather than basic technical improvements, they collaborate with U2 to put albums into your library. When you look at it like that, a lot of what Apple does makes more sense because they are not coming from a perspective of, how do we make this the best for the user? But more of, what kind of thing can we do with the industry to look cool.

Which is why they are going so hard for podcasts, which are a more natural fit for advertisements. And yes it has diluted both the brand and the UX.

While I don’t want to pay more, having tried all the music services Spotify is really unmatched to be honest so can’t wait to try out their lossless option. Discoverability on Spotify and playlists are really unmatched and I really hate the Apple Music interface unfortunately.

What’s the point when they don’t even have Airplay 2 support yet 🙄

The main reason I use Roon is because it can so seamlessly integrate my home library with streamed albums. Just one list of albums in my library, some from Qobuz, some from my hard drive. If Spotify can do that as well, then I may switch (especially since Roon is a bit clunky and slow on macOS) and I’d love to have one subscription for this instead of two.

Like everyone, i’ve waited for this forever, but being the owner of AirPods, will wait in queue for when an IOS wireless audio codec catches up & take advantage of it.

When do we think that‘ll happen?

I am a Spotify Premium user but if they are trying to get more money from me for this then it won’t be happening.

I would switch to Apple Music but I completely detest the queueing function
