really? in 2022? why????
Now there is a perfectly good reason to bring back the iPod!
I’m holding out for the Car Thing v2.
The first iPod was lacking and the first iPhone was lacking. This, too, is lacking, but it only has to be good enough to be profitable and allow them opportunity to iterate over time. At least they’re trying something, which is more than I can say for Epic :)

I don't understand what the value proposition of this device is over a $20 smartphone mount and opening up the Spotify app.

Yes ideally it would have been brought closer, but this is where the OEM screen was and the shape of the dash would make it impossible to have it completely flush, it would need to be inset slightly at least.

Yeah I used to have a Z4 too and the screens were in a cut-out on top of the dash, and folded out. I've seen retrofits but it's a big job!

Just wish Apple offered to car brands the various iPad, iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad Pros as in-car entertainment systems.

They'd be speedy, fast and lower power consumption. A 12.9" display for CarPlay would be so awesome!

Agreed, why they haven't made a tablet holder the new 'DIN' in cars I don't know...

sure, initial iPod/iPhone were lacking features, but that is what, 15-20 years ago? So will more people subscribe to Spotify because of this? doesn't every Spotify subscriber today have a smartphone already? what's is the appeal for this device? better sound quality? no. more choices? no idea, I do not subscribe to Spotify (nor to Apple Music for that matter). I don't get it ...

Apple should sue Spotify for not allowing Apple Music on this Garbage Thing.

Oh so this is the useless crap Spotify has been working on instead of pushing Hi-Fi audio.

I use Apple Music and thus, my phone mounted to my car window. Eventually, I'm going to get a new car with Carplay included that will make that unnecessary. Cool idea, but one that I think is already on it's way out with respect to future tech.

Ironically the only cars I can think of that this would be useful for do not have bluetooth, aux or usb either, every other car has it already built in anyway and what would you do with navigation? (I suppose this device does not include Google Maps?) there is only so many devices the fan can handle
Actually, there is a narrow range of cars made around the early 2010s that had BlueTooth but not a display. And I bet most cars with a display made until the CarPlay/Android Auto era of the late 2010s doesn't have Spotify apps. Furthermore, many cars made since the early to mid 2000s have Aux ports but nothing else smart.

I've had a car from both categories. Even my 2011 Outback Limited (highest tier Outback at the time) had Bluetooth but nothing else. Although I think there was an optional nav package for thousands more that had a display. Currently I have a Qi mount that keeps it charged and I use that to control music.

I think these will sell ok for the price and how widely Spotify can market these through their massive user base, but really, why not just use your phone? You can use Siri to control the playback and the car's volume knobs work the same for Bluetooth in most cars. Works great for me.

If I'd ever buy one of these at all, it would at least have to offer "universal support" for most popular streaming music services.
Exactly. As a concept it intrigues me - I just want to be able to easily control my music safely while driving. I have Spotify now, but if I ever switched I would want it to work as a generic bluetooth receiver. Since it only works with Spotify I'll pass.

I saw a post where someone used this on their desk beneath their monitor a while back. Knowing how cluttered a digital workspace can get and how people often prefer to add physical hardware to simplify this (think of multiple monitors), it actually made a lot of sense. I’ll edit in the post if I can find it.

EDIT:
I literally do this with my iPhone throughout the day. I find it simpler than running Apple Music in a space on my Mac and my AirPods Pro seamlessly switch between my Mac and iPhone for audio. I'm looking forward to using my iPad Pro for this once that new Universal Control feature once it comes out of beta. I want to have Apple Music open on one side, and Slack open on the other. Although it will be interesting to see how Slack handles drag and drop files from the Mac...

Wonder how long before this is hacked to use it for whatever you want? I'm interested to see how the computing power of this compares to something like the latest Raspberry Pi, and with a decent capacitive touchscreen included as well as control knobs...I could see this being an interesting peripheral hack.

I just picked one up. It’s cheap and I can think of multiple uses for it, primarily situations where I want friends to be able to take turns controlling the music in a social setting without either having to switch airplay devices (aka dictator control) or having to leave my own phone or iPad unlocked for everyone to use.

My only concern is if I have to always physically plug my phone into something, that will be a major pain. If I can connect via wifi or Bluetooth to the stereo and this thing can just be on for anyone to use whenever they feel like it, that is every bit of functionality I’d be happy with for $100.

15 years ago, did anyone look at an iPod and predict “This will lead to Macs not using Intel processors!” No, but there’s a pretty straight line from the iterative successes of the iPod, to the iPhone, to their own iPhone silicon, to the M1 Mac. The point is, they’re making an effort (and Epic isn’t) which may pay off in ways that no one right now could possibly be aware of.

The first step for any technology becoming wildly popular and a being a runaway success, is to exist.

I got one of these things back in December and I actually kinda like it. My car does CarPlay, but I typically have Google Maps open. This makes it easy to pause music or see what's playing without switching between maps and Spotify on my headunit.

Do I need it? No. Is it nice to have? Yeah.

Seems like a better use case. I don’t understand clipping a piece of hardware to a place where hot air comes from.
