Spotlight closes unexpectedly

... after I type 5 or 6 letters.
Tried re-starting machine with same results.

You don't happened to be on Security Update 2018-05 beta version are you...?

No. I don't use Beta software, at least not knowingly. I update after I grow weary of the reminders. I discovered one workaround: type a single letter, click Show All in Finder THEN enter the remainder of the search.

Problem is, Spotlight crashes even after I type only just one letter...
