Spotlight Indexing

Do the indexes created by Spotlight take up any space?

If so, is that space considerable?

Also, I just needed to restart my MBP by holding down the power button (couldn't do it any other way) and now Spotlight is reindexing everything. Why? It doesn't usually reindex after a reboot...
