After reading this thread, the word "Rubbish" has lost all meaning. :)

Meathane's movie link did work for me, but I think this thread is rapidly becoming my definition of rubbish. I'm not sure why I even bothered to watch it. For #$#$'s sake. We aren't accusing you of lying about your problem. But if you're not willing to click one link and follow a simple procedure and try to fix it, maybe you should switch back to Windows....

You're bordering "troll-ville."

I have to admit, when a poster suddenly shows up complaining and can't even bother to write in english I write it off as a troll until proven otherwise.

Is there a way to add the system and library folders to the spotlight list?

Is it drag and dropable (the pref pane) - I installed Tiger on my FW drive just haven't had much time to play around with it?

I don't understand what the second part of your question means...draggable and droppable to where? From where? Spotlight's pref pane is pre-installed.

For the first part, I do not see an easy way to make the Spotlight searches you execute from the menu bar search the system folders. However, searches executed from the spotlight bar of the Finder do include the system folders. Also you can set a custom set of multiple non-adjacent / contiguous directories that you want to search, such as the /Library, /System/Library and ~/Library folders. :) Hope that answers?

I don't have my laptop with me (something about the display being broken  ) but it should be pretty easy to find out -- just try dropping /Library into the includelist and see what happens!

How about file paths?

A bit off the subject, but not quite: Spotlight works great for me. But there's one thing it doesn't do that I think is just a plain silly oversight. In the old Finder Command+F, when you searched for a file, it would find it, and in the bottom of the list window, it would give you the entire file path for that file, allowing you to not only go to the file, but also to the folder it's in. Spotlight does nothing of sorts. If I find a file I have to open it. Otherwise, I have to go around it by clicking on "Show All," then Control clicking on the file you want, and hitting "Show In Finder." Am I missing something here? Is there a way to make spotlight display file paths, or am I gonna have to keep using Command+F instead of Spotlight when I want to get a file in the Finder as opposed to opening it?

NOW, come on...

This is very unfair. The poster may have limited use of the English language: do not judge with such alacrity.

If having a limited and apparently underdeveloped understanding of the English language means that the person is a troll, then many Americans are trolls.

Take it easy.

By the way: I think Spotlight is awesome.

Use spotlight, then click on the file to show the path!

Back on topic, I've gotta admit that Spotlight didn't index properly the first time I upgraded to Tiger but I did a clean install and it's all good now. Everything's indexed, and running fast as a... Tiger? ;)

If you just hover your mouse over the item for a couple of seconds it displays the Path in a little box, well it does for me anyway.

I did an erase and install, re-installed all my apps and then copied back saved docs etc. Spotlight works fine for me and has quickly become THE method of finding a file. My fellow windows-based colleagues are very, very envious...

Sure enough! Thanks! :) Although, there's no way I know of to *act* on that info, besides remembering it and going and hunting for it. But it's very useful if you have multiple similar filenames in different directories, and the dirs can tell you which is which. :D

while i agree that the original poster was a bit too argumentative for my taste, i have found difficulty finding a search or two simply because spotlight MISSED IT! i knew exactly where it was (top level of Documents folder) but i'm trying to get in the habit of opening things via QT/Spotlight...anyway, it didn't find this folder (it was a disk image file...) for some reason. but once i mounted it, spotlight was able to find it okay. and i'm doing this on brand spanking clean install. i'm not saying spotlight isn't everything it's claimed to be (i love it!), but there may be bugs here and there and i think this forum is exactly the kind of place we should be allowed to post those kinds of bugs. my 2 cents.

No, that poster is posting in IM speak.

I am very familiar with what someone who is unfamiliary with the language writes writes like. Statements like "omg uve gotta c ths" are not borne of difficulties from being EFL.
