Yeah, I'm not going to lie, my parents financed a part of my Powerbook too, under the condition that they could have my still pretty new windows Pc and if I didn't caddy all of last summer I would not be typing this reply on my PB. I know what you mean though, because parents can be very hard to deal with when convincing them to make an investment in a mac for somebody else. It took me years to get my dad convinced that macs are superior machines.

I'm going to High School - can I use it?

I think if one of your parents is a teacher or a member of the PTA or board they might be eligible. I'm not entirely sure on the PTA and board part but I remember reading something like that in Apple's EDU agreement.

yeah, but I feel like the extra portability and versatility is so worth it. Don't get me wrong, I know a couple of people with desktops at my school that seem to be perfectly fine with having a desktop, but I also know a lot of people with desktops who after coming to college would prefer to have a laptop.

Laptops for college suck.

My cousins laptops were stolen more than once with the security lock on it.

sure its easier to steal a desktop w/o a security lock vs. a laptop with one...

Also, students have better computers than if they used laptops - an iBook vs. an iMac... which is better?

Well I think it depends how well you look after your laptops. I pretty much make sure my door is always locked and I would never leave it somewhere even with a security lock. If im in the library and studying I just ask someone to watch it for me. Of course this is easy for me to do since the college I go to is relatively small and everybody knows everybody. Other than that I am paranoid about my Powerbook and won't leave it anywhere unprotected.
most students dont need all the power of a desktop for what they have to do at school unless they go to film school. but then again if you need power, there are plenty of computer labs at most schools nowadays.
I do some pretty intensive image editing in Photoshop on my Powerbook, often handling a ton of RAW files and over 400mb tabloid spread designs with out any problems. And I dont really have the time to do anything so intensive that it would require a desktop anyway.

The question you pose about whether an imac or ibook is better again depends on the purpose you need it for. For some people the portability might be what they are looking for. Others might need the power of a desktop.

I bought an iBook G4 for college, with plans of getting a desktop down the road to go with it.

However, I've realized I only need one computer, a laptop, I can do everything with it, and I use it all the time because it does go everywhere. Can also set it up as a desktop.

I wish I went with a powerbook now though.. :(

is the ibook that slow? Or whats up?

The promo rules say that "Apple education promotional bundle pricing, education institution pricing, and other education promotional offers supersede this offer."

Does this mean you cannot stack this rebate off of the current educational pricing?

If I am able to get both this rebate and the educational pricing, I am buying a new PowerBook, absolutely.

if you go to www.apple.com/go/savenow you will see that you can use the 100MIR plus the educational discount.

taken from the website:
"In addition to the savings you always receive with your student discount, you'll get $100 back by mail when you buy and take possession of a qualifying Mac* between May 2, 2005, and June 25, 2005."

Woo Hoo! $100 back on my soon-to-be 15" purchase. Plus, what rocks even more, it gives me time to wait for WWDC to see what happens and still be elligible for this promotion.

Yes. I'm in the same boat. This is the same as the ADC discount with less hassle. If they come out with a new 15" before this expires, I'm probably going to be all over it. But my guess is they wait till this expires before they announce new PowerBooks.

Well I am a little pissed about this because I just purchased a PM this past thursday the 28th and on monday they come out with this $100 rebate. That blows for me.

No, not really. It's just that I use my iBook all the time, everyday, it's my only computer. For that, I think it would be worth it to get the Powerbook, even though the differences are small, they really make it worth it for an everyday computer. The little differences win me over. But too late now, I'll have to wait, maybe till the day when G5's rev b come out... :D Now if you have a desktop and a portable... I think iBook is all you need. ;)

Does that mean you could get a Rev A. iMac G5 w/ superdrive for $899? The reconditioned ones are $999-$100? That would be really cheap!

Quote from the rebate form I printed out:

"This offer is not valid with the purchase of Apple education promotional bundles, used equipment, or refurbished equipment."

Was hoping to pick up a refurb 15" PB for a sweet price.

Does that include stuff in the sales section??

No. Just stuff in the "Apple Certified" and "Promos" section.

Alrite, well that makes me feel better since I am not eligible. I got the now old Dual1.8 PM from the sales section.

Does anyone here take this as a message that they won't release any updates after this period ends and before the new school year starts, because that's just mean. Or do you think this solidifies that they will?

Awesome!! An iMac G5 for $1200!!!

You get the low-end iMac G5 for 1200 anyway at an academic discount. I would use this but my mom is buying it as an administrative faculty member at the college she works at :( oh well.

No because durring the first couple weeks of this promo they already updated the iMac and eMac.

Yeah, I wouldn't be suprised by that. It seems likely that they'll use it to get rid of stock. Honestly, I'd assume that they probably won't update things in this time period. But on the other hand, iBooks are "due" and it kind of seems like the PB needs an update if the iBook gets it (although the last time the iBook got one and the PB didn't), so I wouldn't be suprised to see both laptops get some sort of update at WWDC. It could really go either way.

Another thing to keep in mind is they also generally offer the Cram and Jam rebate before school starts up, so it's pretty likely that there will at least be some sort of update during one of the promos.
