Looks like Dan Hesse is out too. Sprint is expected to announce a new CEO as soon as tomorrow. Reportedly he's being let go for his inability to close the T-mobile deal.

That's excellent. Having trouble with your CEO, sprint? Hopefully, Sprint collapses, and it will just be 3 major carriers instead. Verizon, AT&T, and T-mobile. How awesome does that sound?

Not so awesome to the FCC. The reason the FCC didn't want Sprint to merge with T-Mobile is because it would have made three carriers and not four.

Your scenario has exactly the thing happening that the FCC didn't want!

However, I am totally with you in regards to Dan Hesse. He needed to go two years ago when NV started.

I'm glad. I'm switching carriers in September when the iPhone 6 drops and T-Mobile was off the table due to Sprint possibly merging. Now they are back on the table.

And why doesn't the FCC want that?

^^^Same. Except it'll be in the new year for me.

Yes!!!!

Yes!! Keep competition alive!

T-Mobile is forcing the other carriers to offer more and charge less. This is good for everyone regardless of which carrier you choose. And, by the way, if you are with T-Mobile post-paid, they just upped their basic plan from 1GB to 2.5GB of high-speed data per line if you have 4. You have to call and ask for it.

4 lines for $100, now with 10GB of 4G LTE data
What does T-Mobile have that AT&T doesn’t? Four lines with unlimited talk and text plus 10GB of 4G LTE data, that’s 2.5GB for each line, per month until 2016—all while on our data strong network. Plus no domestic overages and no annual service contracts. We’ll pay your family’s Early Termination Fees (up to 5 lines) when you trade in your devices.

Let's hope Deutsche Telekom can find a buyer.

They've been trying to get rid of their North American operation of T-Mobile... but so far they've had no luck.

That has got to be frustrating.

It isn't exactly accurate to say that the merger with AT&T was "blocked" by the FCC and DoJ. The DoJ did sue on anticompetitive grounds, but at the time AT&T swore they'd prove in court that the merger would not harm competition. In the end AT&T decided to drop the merger plan, claiming that it was "blocked" by the government. But in reality they simply decided to give it up.

You're too smart for your own good. The deal
Would have gone through w/o govt sueing. ATT internally decided they would lose the case in court (or I'd cost too much money) so they dropped it. In effect they were blocked.

This is good news all around. Sprint and T-mobile have similar coverage so merging wouldn't exactly benefit any consumers. Now Son will have to prove his worth and turn Sprint around into a viable competitor from within.

Kudos to dumping the CEO. Sprint was a good company once. At some point, I don't know when, they went full on evil. I've been using TMobile on and off for the last 10 years for various things and they've never been evil.

Question

Now WHEN and HOW can I unlock my iPhone 5s to use on ATT or T-Mobile or VERIZON?

I know it's technically possible, but HOW???

It would be easier for three carriers to collude than four. There are three major carriers in Canada, and prices are generally higher as a result. The question is, what is Sprint going to do now? Maybe the new CEO will go all "uncarrier".

They could start by, you know, having service that's worth having. lol.

I don't think they call themselves DT in Germany any more, I'm pretty sure I saw T mobile signs over there too. Anyway I don't see why they want to sell so bad rather than just try to make a go of their US operations? I've never even seen anyone take a guess?

Yes! As a T-Mobile customer, I'm glad this isn't happening.

Apparently Iliad (a French telecom) wants T-Mobile, but are (was) outbid by Softbank/Sprint. Guess they can go for it now.

Deutsche Telekom is the landline, T-Mobile is the mobile -- similar to Verizon vs. Verizon Wireless, for example.

I think Sprint is one of the weaker carriers.

Good. And I just placed Test Drive order few minutes ago. I am on AT&T for iPhone and T-Mobile (free 200MB) for retina iPad mini. And while not terrible, T-Mobile's coverage is significantly worse than AT&T, at least as far as iPad is concerned.

I hope to be proven wrong, and I really hope that iPhone 6 will support T-Mobile's 700MHz LTE band 12.

T-Mobile's data coverage will be improving in the near future.

My understanding, and experience, is that their calling coverage is great.

The nest iPhone will be great on T-Mobile, especially with WiFi calling.

I don't know exactly why... but I'm sure you can look it up.

All I know is... they've been trying since 2011.

I think it is a good thing that Sprint will not be taking over T-Mobile. More choices and competition are best for customers.

thank god. Sprint is a pretty terrible network and they would kill all of t-mobile's recent momentum

This should help ILIAD (French internet and mobile provider) to buy T mobile.

In France, Iliad CEO Xavier Niel is considered as the Steve Jobs of Internet and mobile by bringing a really great services for a very low cost.

For example, look at the Freebox V6 functionallities which was released in the 2011 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freebox

This is the Iliad mobile service (called Free Mobile) and history : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Mobile

Sprint would have ruined T-Mobile with that acquisition.
I'm so happy it didn't happen. :D
T-Mobile should remain T-Mobile, and Sprint should continue to be crap as always.

I think Sprint is one of the weaker carriers.

I would say the worst carrier with the worst Customer Service ever.

----------

I would add that T-Mobile is the best thing that could have happened to the Mobile Service market.
Without them, we would still be paying $.25 per minute, and using our internet with a teardrop.

Anyone think there is a chance legere might break his contract as CEO with tmobile and be the new CEO of sprint?

For those who don't know, legere and son go way back...
