Interesting.
Its been close to 4 weeks now that the Sprint 5S is out and never heard of anyone confirm such a thing.
All you gotta do is stick an AT&T or Tmobile sim in and let us know.

I will when I see my friend. Idk when but I would have to deactivate this device with sprint first correct?

Not 100% on how the cdma iphones work.
I think if you stick a gsm sim it will take you to the activation screen if its unlocked and then it will work with that sims gsm carrier.
If not it will say that sim is not supported.

I hope y'all find it unlocked that'd be great. Waiting in ordering 2 5s through an employee plan, gotta wait for them to be available

To eyoungren-san, thank you for your rapid reply! And I am totally amazed again to see how the discussion on this thread has progressed in just a couple of days!

To those who have participated in this discussion so far, so now is it safe to say that it IS possible that from the get-go the sprint 5s can be used as an unlocked phone in Japan ?

Thank you always!

I believe internationally it is definitely a safe assumption. The problem is figuring out domestic use. Still need to get my hands on a GSM sim to figure it out though.

To locoboi187-san and Applejuiced-san, thank you for your comments. Well, it seems we need some experimental proof to be able to say the Sprint 5s is unlocked internationally. I wish I could....

Even international I think you have to request it from sprint.
Not sure they come like that out the box.

That's what I always thought. I was just assuming they were internationally unlocked since the 5S IMEI's said unlocked. But I guess we won't find out unless someone tests any of this.

So I tried to pop in a AT&T sim and it didn't work.
That would indicate then that it's only internationally unlocked. The website, possibly doesn't know the difference - or is in error.

Note that I read some info over at s4gru.com today. One of the Sprint techs was talking about the UICC SIMs Sprint uses. Sprint codes the MEID for the phone on the SIM. That's how the pairing works. If the SIM doesn't read the MEID it was coded with then no network. So, not even (as I have mentioned in other posts) swapping in a different Sprint SIM will work.

MEID, by the way, is a code based on the IMEI that Sprint and Verizon (I think) use. It's a CDMA thing only.

That's what I was afraid off:(

I was really hoping it to be for domestic but no luck! Weird thing is it didn't even ask me an unlock code or anything it. It just brought up the activation screen and said it wouldn't work with that carrier!

Interesting, thanks for everyone's insight. I know there's service to unlock AT&T iPhone for $30 to $40 and I heard that it works on my friends device. Just curious if there's also such service available for Sprint device, a full unlock that will allow the Sprint device to be used with any US carrier?

In that case it seems Verizon has the most robust device as it can be used with both CDMA and GSM network! So that led to another question, can I buy a Verizon phone at full price (without signing up for Verizon service)? It seems a better idea to get a Verizon phone than the unlocked T-Mobile phone. With Verizon's phone, I have the choice to go with any carrier (well except Sprint).

Yes, you can buy a Veruzon iphone 5s from the Apple store without a contract. We did this for my daughter, then got an ATT sim card for Straight Talk servuce. Had a littke dufficulty getting up and running since everyone at ST keot insisting it couldn't be done, but she's been with ST now running on ATT towers for a couple years now. I, on the other hand, bought my 5s from ST at a discount, and it runs off Verizon towers. I was told by one rep just yesterday (4/6/16) that their white ones run off Verizon, while the black go iff ATT. Who knows what the logic is there.

I don't believe Apple sells the iPhone 5s anymore. Also, old thread.
