iPad mini Sprint nano sim card?

Hello, I used sprint long ago for a short time but am not very familiar with them now. I have an ipad 2 mini sprint, unlocked, that has a sprint nano sim in it. I know sprint is cdma, but what's up with the sim? Is their ipad data gsm?

LTE requires sim cards which us why Verizon and sprint use them

OK, thank you. Perfectly explained. I havn't had cdma for many years so the sim surprised me.
