No. You're giving Sprint your iPhone 7, and paying $175 for an iPhone 8, which is yours to keep if you stay with Sprint for 18 months. You're basically getting a $525 value trade-in.

The way they're getting you to stay in leu of a contract is that your lease payments are $29.17 each for 18 months. Sprint will give you a credit of $29.17 each month for 18 months.

If you quit Sprint, the credits end but you still owe those $29.17 payments.

At the end of the lease, the amount 'paid' is 18 months x $29.17 = $525. For an additional $175, you can keep the iPhone 8 and do with it what you want. If you DON'T pay the $175, then you need to give the phone back to Sprint.
Well Mr. Smarty that was a good math but your reading comprehension is off. The bill credit is good for 12 months the rest is yours. Although my math is off that's a total of $350.04 to be exact. If you're already planning to do that and I hope you read this first first before taking the action. You're welcome and I helped you save couple hundreds of dollars from your pocket. You're totally the kind of person Sprint targeted for this promo.

I don't think you read it correctly.

This is what the MacRumors article said:
"With the trade in, Sprint will waive the regular $29.17 charge for 18 months. After at least 12 lease payments, all of which are covered by the promotion, customers can trade in the iPhone 8 and upgrade to a new iPhone."

You CAN lease it for only 12 months. If you do THAT, then you either (a) actually DON'T owe $350, because you don't buy the iPhone 8 - you must trade it in for the next phone you get, or (b) Can pay an additional $175 (for a total of $350) and keep the phone and trade it in yourself or switch carriers or whatever. But that's YOUR choice. Sprint will still give you 6 more $29.17 credits (~ $175) if you keep your phone for the full 18 months.

I went to the Sprint site to confirm that what MacRumors wrote, and this is exactly the deal.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Sprint is terrible. I would not use their network even if they paid me!

I think Sprint calls this the, "don't forget about us we still exist deal".

Well done… Mr. Smarty, lol.
Insulting your reading comprehension…based on his poor reading comprehension. Too funny.

The key to the deal is understanding how Sprint's flex lease and monthly bill credits works. Mr. Smarty obviously understands. Others…not so much.

Every Sprint thread devolves into this. 10 poster saying they hate Sprint vs. 1 or 2 (if even that) actually discussing the topic of the article/post. Fun.

Precursor...just trying to shed some light if it might help someone make a decision. Not looking to call anyone out or attack anyone's ability to read, write, or do math.

I have been with sprint now since 6S and do the iPhone forever thing. Just upgraded last night to iPhone 8's (preorder anyway). Here is what I know:

My service is not as good as those on Verizon or ATT based on extremely scientific evidence (read: talking to my friends). I am also not out in the boonies, and it works where I go.

I can't beat the cost. We have the 4 line 40 GB deal (two 6S and two 6S+) with hotspot and all that jazz. (We don't hit the limit, so we are probably not crazy data users) $178.xx a month. Phone leases included in that number.

I have been paying $15 and $19 a month respectively for 6S and 6S+ on the plan. I hand in my phones and get iPhone 8 and 8+ for $14.xx and $18.xx moving forward. Essentially, bill stays the same. This is due to the credits the article mentioned.

Nope, don't own the phones at the end. There is probably some money I am leaving on the table there, but I like the convenience of handing in a phone and getting a new one and paying what I believe is a decent price for 4 iPhones.

Obviously, it doesn't matter what kind of deal it is if Sprint doesn't work for you so I totally get that point.

Hope that might help somebody out there if they are considering a switch.

I prefer to own my phones, and in my line of work constantly leaving the US I need to have an unlocked iPhone in order to switch between carriers as I travel. So putting down roots with Sprint would be the last thing on my mind. lol
