"but the overall report was seen as questionable given that it also claimed that Sprint will not receive the iPhone 5 until 2012, a claim that directly contradicts other recent mainstream media reports."

Rumors contradicting rumors!?!? Say it ain't so!! :O

Woah! Hold up there, buckaroo... Let's try using some common sense!

Apple is not going to launch a WiMax iPad for the same reason it isn't launching an LTE iPhone; power consumption and absence of widespread availability.

While I agree that Apple isn't going to launch a WiMax iPad or iPhone, widespread availability isn't the reason. Sprint has a pretty well built-out WiMax network. They won't do it for one reason only: It will require a separate manufacturing run.

Plus, Sprint is the only carrier that support WiMax and it will soon announce plans to transition to LTE. Apple isn't going to launch an iPad that's going to become obsolete in a matter of weeks.

This is the real "Woah!" I think we can all acknowledge that Sprint is going to transition to LTE. But this transition won't take "a matter of weeks". We're looking at 18-36 months. They'll probably start sometime next year and be fully transitioned by 2015. It isn't going to happen overnight AND the WiMax network isn't just going to come down in that same time frame.

The power consumption claim is valid though. You can bet Apple is waiting for a 28nm all-in-one solution from their new buddies at qualcomm.

What hardware changes are needed for Sprint iPad 2?

So have more then one antenna inside as well, no?

Yes, at the least. For instance, transmit and receive bands are separate. Then you often have separate bands for 3G and even 4G in Verizon's and Sprint's cases.

The more narrow the band you tune your antenna for, the better noise rejection you're going to have, so it's usually the case that more is better.

You antennae start getting very complex if you want a wide frequency band and a good sharp roll-off.

Exactly. 4g technology with a data cap is about as useful as a mule in a miniskirt

Depends on your intent. If you want to use it as a mule, it will function just fine and look ridiculous.

If you want it to use the miniskirt, take it to Mexico, and it will still function just fine.
