No, you're still paying $649 for the phone even if you get it for $199 up front. You are paying back that balance over the 2 year contract, even if AT&T and Verizon don't say it, you are. The difference is that T-Mobile is telling you how much it is, while the others aren't.

Plus with T-Mobile when the interest free loan is paid off in 24 months your monthly payments lower by $20/month. Not the case with AT&T, Verizon or Sprint.

Sprint unlocked an iPhone 4S for us, have used a tmobile sim in here in the US. Sprint also unlocked my iPhone 5, used a foreign sim in it while traveling.

Basically, you're wrong on this point.

They won't unlock my 4S. They just tell me it's against company policy so I would have to agree with the previous poster.

The only way I could think of getting my Sprint iPhone 4S unlocked would have been to jailbreak it. Not what I wanted to do.

Pretty good deal considering 12-months on their current Unlimited, My Way is just a little less than the $1192.

$50 (Umlimited talk and text) + $30 (Unlimited data) = $80/month + $199 phone = $1159.

Main advantage for T-mobile's Jump is you get to do it twice a year but I'm guessing that's why it's $228 more per year.

Everybody realizes people want the latest technology. Nobody wants to wait 2 years or more

lots of people wait 2 years. in fact, most US cell customers wait two years, which lines up well with their contracts.

tech enthusiasts like us are not the normal consumer.

No thanks. With two lines on my account I can stagger 2-year plans. I don't see why anyone would want to pay more.

people who arent on staggered 2-year plans? maybe?

Also, does this mean you do not own the phone and thus cant sell it at cost when the new device is rolled out?

you own the phone. if you dont want to sell it while on the plan, you must pay the remainder of the device balance. if you choose to do an annual upgrade then in effect you were leasing the phone.

I'm in the US right now...

But I'm afraid this is because I adopted Tmo early on; the plan/option might not be available any more. I signed up about a year ago, but it was on in January.

And, it is very fast.

A most significant point.

It's not only tech enthusiasts that don't want to wait but people with damaged phones and no insurance. Sprint's and T-mobile's early upgrade plans are good for them too.

They are ripping you off

I am paying $40/month in canada for 1g/month data and everthing else unlimited. I am with Virgin mobile silver plan at $45 minus $5 because I use an unlock phone

I haven't checked ebay, but used iphones are awy more than $300 here. $400 is the going rate for an iphone 5. Which shocked me, but that's what they go for. I will gladly buy your iphone 5 for $300 though :) PM me.

I went conservative with my pricing estimates, in the event that a seller doesn't have much experience or sells at a bad time. A 4S still gets over 300, and my 3g, 8GB sold for close to $200 last year. They certainly do hold their value!

How bad is it in LA? I live in LA myself and am thinking of switching to T-Mo.
Depends on how important data speed and coverage is to you. If you primarily use wireless and can deal with sub-par data coverage/speed then go ahead with the switch. T-Mobile doesn't lock you in with a contract so you can leave without a fee if you don't like it.

I don't know how much clearer to make this, but do not UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES switch to Sprint.

Unless you of course are nostalgic for the dial-up era. That's about as fast as you'll ever see on the Sprint network - and that's if you can get a connection at all.

I have a few weeks left on my contract and will be jumping ship immediately.

That's where we in Europe have it so good, we have the option of SIM-only plans where you're not paying a premium to subsidize a phone. £15 ($24) a month for truly unlimited data, 5000 texts and 2000 minutes? Thank you very much.

Yeah, we get taken hard by the carriers here in the States. It's kind of infuriating that, even with all the major providers, competition hasn't dropped the rates down.

I'm still paying, roughly, the same amount of money for a monthly bill that I did when I bought my first Palm Treo smartphone in 2005.

The main problem with this is it's Sprint. Just about everyone I know that's had Sprint has been very dissatisfied with their service. Every company has their detractors but I'm very leery of Sprint. And so far, we're happy with T-Mobile.

Amen! Amen! I had to break my contract 18 months into it because data became intolerable! 0.005 Mbps on a good day.

which carrier?

Sprint is doing a very objective comparison... good for them!

But the "The Value" Statement is a bit misleading though.

The total cost of the phone is still the same... people don't save on the first year. They simply pay less in the first year and owe more for the remaining. If they were to quit using Sprint, they still have to pay similar overall amount.

I'm well over 3GB ever month. My work entails driving to client's homes daily and that's why I use the Garmin app. It uses a good deal of data. I agree with you about the 130kbps with Sprint, it's just horribly slow. Not even sure about the 4G in my area, but it's probably spotty in many places. Wish I could leave Sprint but I'm still another year into the contract. :(

which garmin app do you use? i use the "U.S.A." one which is a couple GBs in size, which as i understand it stores all the maps offline so wont consume map data over cellular. im curious if thats not the case.

Are you sure it is the Garmin app? I use TomTom app, and thought they would be similar since they both have downloaded maps. In fact I often use TT with an old phone that is basically an iPod right now, zero data.

Sorry but I call BS on this one. Sprint will not under any circumstances unlock any of their devices to use on another domestic carrier. None. When they unlock it, it's only for international use.

Nonetheless you are paying $649 for a new phone every year rather than $199 every other year.

But your monthly payments don't change to reflect that (with the exception of T-Mobile). If I subsidize my own phone, I technically should get lower monthly rates from any of the telecoms. But that's not the case; they all charge about the same regardless. And either way, you're essentially locked into a plan unless you want to buy your way out of it. It's nothing but the illusion of choice.
