It was shot w/a Sony Z1U

So what do you think of the Sony Z1U? I'm possibly going to be moving on up to HDV this year and I want to get something I'll be happy with.

The Z1U is a nice unit. You'll be happy with it. Do you need XLR connectors? I'd go with the cheaper FX1, if not.

I'm looking at the HVX200 and it looks mighty impressive. Some downloadable clips available on the net.

The Canon XL-H1 is also great too, and it has interchangeable lens and runs on HDV tape, too. But kind of pricey, and I've seen some footage and it's contrast ratio and highlight handling is pretty awful.

Wow! http://www.bestpricecameras.com/prodetails.asp?prodid=194135&start=1

I had expected to pay around $5k for a decent one - this HDR-FX1 is quite cool, and a much better deal - it might almost be a done deal now. And at 1080, that's a nice sharp image :D

Mr. Anderson,

The computer graphics were created by someone else, but I did the simple animations on them (the zooms and pans).

As far as cameras go the Sony's, the JVC, the Panasonic, and the Canon (to a lesser extent) all have pro's and con's and seem to fill different niches. Personally, I'm not a big fan of HDV as a format (especially in post). The Sony's are interlaced only and their "cineframe24" (mock 24fps look) is just ugly. The JVC is 720p (@ 60, 30, and 24fps), but as of yet you can't edit the 24p footage in FCP. The Canon (at around $10k) is overpriced unless you need SDI out, IMO. I like Panasonic's HVX200 the best, but it's $8-10k total if you want to shoot HD (it shoots DVCProHD not HDV).

In a year or two, once solid state and HDD-based storage solutions for the Panasonic have come down in price I wonder how long HDV will remain a legitimate option.

And, last but not least, if your HD(V) camera isn't going to make money for you (i.e. you don't have a paying client that wants his/her product in HD) I just say wait. Wait for prices to come down. Wait for the technology to get better. Wait for a mainstream way to view and distribute HD material.

Video was a hit at a family Christmas GTG. My Mom (not a spy) loved it, as well as her sisters.

They all then fell in love with my iPod and tried to steal it :( .

Am I the first with a public showing of this video on an ipod ? :D

Well, my real concern is that I now have a Canon Optura 20. It works fine, but its video quality isn't all that great. I want to get something that looks a lot better and doesn't break the bank. I feel that you might get a bit more with something HDV and 3 CCDs rather than DV and 3CCDs for about the same price. That's why I was surprised at the price of the Sony HDR-FX1.

And I'm going to be shooting a short movie in DC this spring and it would be great to have a decent camera. I haven't looked at renting, but considering that the post production I'll be doing is on FCP back in Indiana, I'll need to have something to transfer the raw footage onto my G5.

Besides, Diaperzilla III in HDV would be quite fun :D

Guess so.... I've got it on my iPod and was all set to show it to friends at Christmas, but we all got so busy that there was never any time and I came home with it still ready for the broadcast. I'll be going back over to their house again pretty soon so I'll of course have my iPod with me and can show it to them then.

Spy Moms

Interesting. Where did you get that idea? I am a P.I. in Boise ID and we have been the Spy-Moms for the last 8 years..... www.spy-moms.com . I am pretty sure that we own that name.

We have had a lot of press, so you must have gotten it from someone.

You're a PI and it took a year and a half to track this film down?

Amazing...

Where did the writer get the idea to have four (not two) stereotypically over protective asian mothers (not American moms from Idaho) keep tabs on their kids (no private investigators here) using Mission Impossible style tactics (I'm assuming y'all use more realistic methods)? I dunno, you'd have to ask him. And how, while writing a movie about moms spying on their kids in a comedically over the top/super spy fashion, did he come up w/the name Spy Moms? Again, not sure exactly, you'd have to ask him.

Time for my obligatory joke whenever ID is mentioned:
Two potatoes are standing on a street corner. How do you tell which one is the prostitute?

It's the one that says, "Idaho" on it. ba-dum-bum Thank you. I'll be here all week folks. Please remember to tip your waitress.

Not to mention, what's the point of a link that auto redirects to another link. Maybe they heard about the film and added the domain and pointed it to their existing site...:D

I'm glad SpyMom woke up this thread. It was fun to watch the movie again. Bravo again!

:munches popcorn while rewinding tape to watch again:

I had my first view of it last night. Somehow I forgot to mention that I enjoyed it as well ;)

Wonderful!

That was great Lethal. I'm glad this thread was resurected. Your short made for a happy ending to the week.

I hadn't seen this thread before... I enjoyed the short though. Good concept, high production values, of course the editing was first-rate... The performances were maybe better than average but needed a bit of smoothing out IMO.

As far as Boise Spy-Moms... Someone just might come up with the idea for "Spy Moms" from the "Spy Kids" movies (major releases a while back), judging from the similar logo in the title, maybe?

If it bothers you, I'd think at worst they might have to add a disclaimer to the end, indicating no association to any firm which might be using that name. However, I doubt any legal case could be made over the title, it's kind of generic, not like "Coca-Cola" or "Kentucky Fried Chicken". Besides, what good would it be to sue someone who probably is not exactly rolling in dough? Plus, if the film gets any attention, people googling it might stumble onto your firm -- incidental attention for you.

My 2¢.

Boise Spy-Mom -- sorry if I sounded sarcastic there. Didn't realize it read quite that way when I wrote it.

I did find the following on legalzoom.com:

"Copyright does not protect names, titles, slogans, or short phrases. In some cases, these things may be protected as trademarks."

also

"Copyright does not protect ideas, concepts, systems or methods of doing something. You may express your ideas in writing or drawings and claim copyright in your description. Be aware that a copyright will not protect the idea itself as revealed in your written or artistic work."

If you're implying that the writer based his script off a press report about you, it seems you'd have to prove some significant similarities. Sounds like Lethal realizes this as well.

If it's any consolation, if Lifetime Network calls you tomorrow wanting to make a movie about your life stories (not being sarcastic here, really -- I can almost see it), you could still use the title "Spy Moms", as titles can't be copyrighted... Unless Robert Rodriguez decides to produce a sequel called "Spy Moms" first -- in which case Lifetime would probably figure it's not worth the legal fight...

Good luck.

You have done well mate, good work bloke, it was "Grouse", don't let anyone knock you for havin' a go.
