Awesome!

We use this for our nonprofit and they are great. It would be very cool to have the ability to accept NFC payments at our fundraisers.

So, if both phones have NFC, then why not just bump the phones together? Why the need for a specialized device hanging precariously out of the audio jack?

As has been said 6 or 7 times in the thread already, the NFC chip in the iPhone is not available to developers, at least not yet.

Besides that, magnetic strip readers are still going to be important for the next couple of years at least. No serious business would remove that as an option at this point.

Yes, thanks - Apple Pay is NFC

Thank you for posting this. I hate when people think Apple party and nfc are mutually exclusive.

Seconded. Please can reporters working on Apple Pay stories make sure to mention (or confirm) that there are plenty of other NFC solutions which will be enabled by a given platform "adopting Apple Pay". Some boilerplate like: "...this will also mean that Square will be able to take payments from Google Wallet and other NFC sources..."

Today I glimpsed a headline someplace else saying "Sephora to add Apple Pay to (n) stores." Of course, what it should have read was "Sephora upgrades POS terminals to NFC in (n) stores".

As a business owner who has used Square since November 2010, I am really pleased that they are keeping up with the times. Though I don't fancy the idea of buying yet another dongle for my phone.

I could see it having an upside for Apple.

Square has spent the last several years building a great payment processor infrastructure. Apple would be able to market Apple Pay directly to small business, instead of relying on their banking partners to do it.
Yeah, because Apple totally wants to be in the business of selling point-of-sale devices and making like $1 per day in profit. Heaven forfend they focus on their exceedingly popular businesses rather than get lost trying to be everything.

----------

Might have already been mentioned but i believe apple tried to purchase square and they turned them down.
Oh really? Where did Apple tell you that? Guess you believe everything you read.

I love how some people just listen to their feelings and don't bother asking questions like 'why'? If Square is voluntarily a part of the iOS / Apple Pay ecosystem, what advantage would come from buying them?

Perhaps it would a be a good defensive maneuver to prevent Samsung or Google from buying them.

Payment hardware that reads cards (and yes Apple Pay are still cards, just a virtual representation of them) has to be approved by the PCI themselves. Which is why the Apple Store uses Verifone jackets to take Apple Pay, because Verifone is an approved device.

Apple pay has the attention of the public right now while NFC doesn't mean squat to most people. Thats why the headlines are like that. In the end, it doesn' really matter. People which use mobile wallets like Google Wallet would know what's what.

I believe I read on MacRumors that the newest iPads have NFC built in so that 3rd party apps can access the feature, despite not having a direct need for Apple Pay via that device.

This suggests that the new Square stand will likely need an upgrade to support cards with chips, but that we retailers will need to buy both a new stand AND the current iPad Air to support NFC payments. I knew this was coming, will still cost less than going with traditional merchant service BS.

Plus, If you are in my situation, I guess you can always sell your other iPads to employees at a discount or something like this to supplement the costs of the new ones. Not bad at all.

Or they could offer both solutions where they sell a reader with the NFC chip built in and a reader that accesses the NFC feature of the new iPad's.

It's not about selling POS devices. It's about creating critical mass for Apple Pay, which in turn sells their iPhones, and further entrenches their ecosystem.

I swear. Sometimes it amazes me how some people can't see the forest for the trees...

i don't think either of these solutions are PCI compliant. What they'll more than likely do is

1) this is probably for Square Stand customers only.
2) you wouldn't need a new iPad, just like the Chip card reader, it'll plug into the accessories USB port to accept both Chip & PIN and NFC

And a distant 3, I can already pay with my phone at all Square merchants thanks to me still having the Square Wallet app :p.

Seeing as how Square takes 3-ish% of each Square transaction, whereas Apple only gets a fraction of 1% for each pay transaction, it would benefit Apple in a colossal way, financially, to purchase Square. They may not need the extra money, but it would be on the same avenue as all the other startup companies they've purchased in the last decade or so.

Also, Apple would gain a lot of infrastructure for rolling out peer-to-peer Apple Pay payments.

Ha. You think Apple needs square to make Apple Pay a success? This isn't Android wallet. Apple Pay can succeed in the real market because it is a good product. It doesn't need Appe to buy out a bunch of companies to force the issue.

I love when people cite rumors as fact. LOL. So cute!

LOL, more gibberish. Apple charges what the market will bare for Apple Pay, nobody will be paying 3%. Square gets that because they are a niche product, but they will never grow beyond that. Apple thinks big picture.

I knew square would do this back when they had rumors of the buy out and apple pay. As for the the fees that square charges they are still lower then anything mcx will charge you in small business. You only get discounts from mcx if you do so many transactions a month and if not they charge you a penalty fee, which is bs. I believe the Apple pay fee of 1% will come out of the square transaction fee. Square isn't going to lose customers to mcx over losing 1% of their fees. I'm also sure they will make a lot of that back in ipad and register sales.

Sweet!!!!

Now come on, bigger retailers, get on board.

Hell, I only want three comapanies to support it as that is where I mostly spend my money (Fred Meyer, Safeway, and Petsmart. Be nice if Costco did too).

Albertsons just bought out Safeway and they're supporting Apple Pay. This means they will become the largest grocery retailer with this purchase, which means the largest grocery chain will have Apple Pay!

I hope they don't change Safeway as I like Safeway and I'm not a big fan of Albertsons :/ (especially not the bakery. Safeway's bakery is way better than Albertson's).

But, I don't mind they introduce Apple Pay to Safeway (and I had no idea Albertson's supported Apple Pay).

And really, they're larger than Kroger? Kroger has Fred Meyer and QFC and I think a few others and I know that I had Kroger when I was in Atlanta and QFC/Fred Meyer in Washington so they seem pretty spread across the country (Where as I didn't know Safeway or Albertson's existed until I moved up to washington). Edit: Looked it up, 2nd largest grocery chain after buying Safeway behind Kroger... :p.

I too prefer Safeway to Albertsons for pretty much everything. I hope the only thing that does happen after this buyout is the fact that they take Apple pay. Safeway shouldn't be too difficult to upgrade, just attach the "NFC hat" on the terminal like many other retailers did.

If they do rebrand all Safeways into Albertsons, you now not only have the entire US a covered, but every other country that has a Safeway as well, bypassing Kroger as worlds largest grocery chain. Though I doubt they'll rebrand any of the Safeways.

Heh, check my edit, not according to wikipedia (which says that the buyout made them the second largest behind Kroger).

And I hope no rebranding. They might be like Kroger and just let the place keep the name (though if you look at QFC it's pretty much Kroger renamed. Fred Meyer for the grocery store as well. So at least with Kroger they haven't seemed to leave the other stores they bought out alone and not changed them to be more like Kroger other than let them keep the name). I mean you can find the same basic bakery bread in Fred Meyer as in QFC. You can find kroger brand stuff in both companies as well as Private Selection which is also a Kroger brand. And that's what they use for their generic brand stuff).

I have both of them near me (Safeway is called Vons here). Safeway doesn't staff their checkouts nearly well enough so there's always massive lines, and my local one doesn't have self checkout. Albertsons is definitely nicer.

The Starbucks Square partnership isn't really what you think. Starbucks is using some tech from Square (what isn't public) but the biggest part was acceptance of the now-defunct Square Wallet. Starbucks will probably support contactless cards and Apple Pay some time in 2015, however.

They will "have" to, because they'll have to buy PIN pads that face the customer for chip cards. The same chip card hardware usually has NFC, which if Starbucks is smart they'll turn on.

The chip card hardware usually consists of a chip card reader, a magnetic stripe reader, and NFC.
