iPhoneFAQ is running a contest giving away 2-year Squaretrade iPhone insurance warranties (covers water damage and breakage accidents unlike AppleCare) as well as a bunch of coupon codes for Squaretrade ($5 off codes go to all entrants).

Enter every day for the next 7 days: Squaretrade iPhone Insurance Giveaway

Oh, this is relevant to anyone that has an iPhone older than 80 or so days not just brand new iPhones (as Squaretrade insurance has to be applied within 90 days of purchase) ...

Well I guess their warranty would be worth it if it was free.

The spill and drop coverage seems pretty decent, considering AppleCare doesn't cover them.

But yeah, can't beat free. :)

aren't the premiums higher along with there being a deductible?

    Applecare - $69
SquareTrade - $144 - $240 depending on if you pay in full plus $50 deductible for spills

    Price of replacement iphone $199

I'll take my chances and pay Apple the extra $5 for the nice benefit of having it replaced on the spot without sending it off somewhere. some of you people are math challenged who think this is a super deal

AppleCare doesn't cover breakages, which is how the vast majority of people end up needing their iPhone replaced -- so to me, it is a non-option. ST is $96-$144 if you're comparing oranges to oranges in terms of cost (can't pay monthly for AppleCare). That's also for 2 years of coverage, not 1.

You can't, to my knowledge, get a replacement iPhone for anything short of $499 (8GB 3G), with the 3GS models costing $599 and $699. The $199 is a subsidized price from AT&T that is only given to new customers or customers that are up for a renewal.

Out of warranty service is $199:

    http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/

    "Out-of-Warranty Service
If you own an iPhone that is ineligible for warranty service but is eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service, Apple will replace your iPhone with a new or refurbished iPhone for the Out-of-Warranty Service fee listed below.

    iPhone 3GS Out-of-Warranty Service
    16GB & 32GB $199

    iPhone 3G Out-of-Warranty Service
    8GB, 16GB $199

    Original iPhone Out-of-Warranty Service
    4GB, 8GB & 16GB $199

All fees are in US dollars and exclude applicable taxes and $6.95 shipping and handling fee

For example, an iPhone that has failed due to damage or liquid damage is eligible for Out-of-Warranty service. However, certain damage is ineligible for OOW service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications."

    Third party insurance is pointless....
Makes more sense to deal with Apple. Obviously that's why they changed their policy.

    :D

    Ha... Funny you said that.

I've never left my iPhone laying anywhere but I did carry around an 5.56 ammo can full of rocks for three weeks as punishment for leaving my M16 at the food truck parked at the firing line and walking 500 yards downrange before realizing it. :D
