About time. I’ve been trying to tell the people of this country that if they squint really hard they can see the light from the lighthouse and get out of our current pickle by capturing this would-be monarch in a net or just waiting for a meteor to crash into the earth and erase all existence, but I had trouble forming the thought through emoji until now.

Who's got two thumbs and just made an extended emoji metaphor? Well, you will once this update comes out.

On the basis of the image alone, how on earth would you know that was a pickle rather than a cucumber - especially now smaller cucumbers are very common?

I tend to think of onions if anyone mentions pickled vegetables, or beetroot, or even ginger. If that is meant to be a pickled member of the cucumber family, it would be better called gherkin or cornichon.

It's meant to be used where you'd use the eggplant, only the eggplant is diseased...

innovations my arse…..

Do we actually need more emojis or is this all apple have left to give these days
You didn't read the article, did you
Apple has very little to no control over the Unicode system, they just have to follow it

I wonder what the process is like to propose suggestions like this to the Unicode Consortium 🤔
Have a look here:

Guidelines for Submitting Unicode® Emoji Proposals

Last Update: 2025-08-01
Accepting Submissions Beginning 2026-04-02
The goal of this page is to outline the process and requirements for submitting a proposal for new emoji; including how to submit a proposal, the selection factors that need to be addressed in each proposal, and guidelines on presenting evidence of frequency.
All submissions are reviewed, and a very small percentage advance for encoding.
Documents submitted that are not publicly available, are incomplete, or from excluded categories are not eligible for consideration.
Note: If your proposal doesn’t meet the emoji criteria, but is a widely used symbol that doesn’t require color, follow the character proposal process outlined here.

Can’t have too many emojis to be fully expressive.
There are something like 4,000 emojis already, yet we haven't come close to exhausting all the ideas, objects, and emotions that people would like to communicate. Wouldn't it be neat if we could somehow come up with a small group of easy-to-remember symbols -- maybe as few as 26 -- that we could string together to express every possible idea, object, or emotion?

It can’t be a cucumber…cucumbers are wrapped in plastic now.
