More info on the slow Samsung 840 and 840 EVO issue:

http://anandtech.com/show/8550/sams...40-evo-read-performance-bug-fix-is-on-the-way

New firmware should be coming 15 October, but I'm not sure if there is any official announcement from Samsung yet. It will be interesting to see the performance and endurance tests with the new firmware.

The 840 Pro and 850 Pro remain unaffected and still give great performance.
Thanks for bringing this issue up. The websites seem to talk about firmware updates for the 840 EVO, but I wonder if the 840 will receive a firmware update as well.

I hope so. As both use TLC nand chips and articles mention both are effected, Samsung should release firmware updates for both. I missed the March 2014 update so I'll just wait for October's and update my 840 then.

I updated my wifes (late 2011) i5 MBP 13" to 8GB of crucial RAM and a Samsung 840 EVO this past Saturday. No issues and it's running fast! she's happy now. before it would run slow. she's a teacher and going back for her masters so a lot of school work is being done with a lot of programs running. all run smooth and open quickly.

i'll be upgrading mine sometime soon with the same combo. my local bestbuy had the 840 EVO on sale for $129.

Just make sure you have TrimEnabler and run it each time there is a OSX update. Once in a while just leave the laptop open over night for OSX can run Trim and you should be fine. There is a bug in the current firmware which should be address next month. Old files which have not be written to the SSD for a while will have a slower read speed then the newer files.

I downloaded it via cindori but I haven't messed with it.

It only takes a second to install and set up. Chameleon SSD Optimizer is another good program. It does the same thing but has a few additional options though not quite as user friendly as cindori's program. You will thank yourself in a few weeks when you write speeds drop down.

I forgot to reenable it after an update once. Write speeds drop down near HD speeds. Ran Trimenabler before going to bed and everything was back to normal the next morning.

I am looking to upgrade my dad's 2007 MBP and am considering the 256GB Samsung 840 Pro and the 256GB Mercury Electra 3G. Any thoughts on which would be better, especially regarding TRIM management, since they are both the same price?

[Edit: Supposedly the Electra does not require TRIM]

The OWC drives use Sandforce controllers and IMO they are not particularly stable. I would go with another brand. The Samsung you mentioned is fine, but with your older machine there is really no need to pay extra for the Pro model when the cheaper Samsung EVO model will work fine.

If availability is an issue, the Samsung Pro will work fine.

Do I need to use Cindori to maintain the performance of the SSD?

[PS--You are right about the price but there is a good deal on it right now.]

… i want to put an SSD drive into my
17-inch, Early 2008 ( Macbookpro4,1 ) …

Which of the original drives do you have at the moment?

250 GB (5400-rpm), 200 GB (7200-rpm), or 300 GB (4200-rpm)

How much memory is installed?

Have you installed Mavericks and if so, did your usage patterns allow you to realise the performance benefits of memory compression?

Do you plan to install Yosemite at any time?

In the absence of details, my first thought is that you might get greater value from an SSHD.

Background: I have an SSHD in a 17" MacBookPro5,2 … performs well enough with 8 GB memory. I can't guess whether SSHD performance would be equally pleasing with the 4 GB constraint of your MacBookPro4,1.

Try to at least spend 5 minutes and read the last page of the thread instead of being lazy. Your mentioned drive is commented on just 3 posts above yours.

thank you,
i'read the past posts
i was wondering if there was other point of view , that's all really
thank you

my MBP have a HDD 320GB, 6 GB ram memory
yes i use mavericks and probably want to install yosemite

i admit i don't know much of the benefits of memory compression

the performance with Maveriks compared to snow leopard : it boot slowly but once has started, it work fine, once i launch apps they work fine , it's just the boot of apps and MacOs that feel slow than SL,
as i do web design and image editing,
specially for the web i need to keep up with the latest version of software plugins and all that

that is why i'm pushing my macbook pro to the limit!!
after 8 years of hard working is still here, and i think is a great machine, plus is 17" which i really appreciate ,

Thank you

hi guys
i want to put an SSD drive into my
17-inch, Early 2008 ( Macbookpro4,1 )

any suggestion?

i was thinking of OWC
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/SSD7E3G480/

what do you think?

thank you

You saw my earlier comment about OWC's SSDs.

The Samsung EVO and the Crucial MX100 are about the best bang for the buck right now IMO. You can get the Crucial for $209 USD now. No reason to pay $262 for the old OWC that is still SATA II.

Your Mac is only SATA II, but SATA is backwards compatible, so the Crucial will work. A SATA III drive will be something you can use later if you happen to ever buy a newer machine that supports SATA III speeds.

Think you for your answer,

Do you think is safe to' go for the 1TB Samsung or The 500Gb?

Thanks for bringing this issue up. The websites seem to talk about firmware updates for the 840 EVO, but I wonder if the 840 will receive a firmware update as well.

Taking a look at those two links again:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1507897/samsung-840-evo-read-speed-drops-on-old-written-data-in-the-drive
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18615995

It appears that on the 15th of October, Samsung released a fix for the 840 EVO for windows users and people have used it to restore their SSD performance.

No update for the Samsung 840 (non-EVO).
So far no update for the Samsung 840 EVO for Mac and Linux users.

Download page on the Samsung site:
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/samsungssd/downloads.html

Scroll down to: Samsung SSD 840 EVO Performance Restoration Software

There is mention of a Dos version for Mac and Linux users to be released later. This suggests that the user will need to burn a CDROM and boot a FreeDOS based updater from the optical drive.

Having mad overheating issues on my MBP 2011 - same specs as my signature, but updated ram to 8GB - and am thinking that an SSD replace might help. Been looking at the OWC kits, but unsure. The overheating issues have always been there, even after replacing the fan and battery. Would an SSD offset some heat?

Yes an SSD will produce much less heat than a spinning hard drive.

picking up a Samsung 840 EVO today for my mid 2009 MBP. hopefully bestbuy still has them on sale for $129. I have 8GB of crucial memory on its way to go with it.

My write speeds have deteriorated since upgrading to Yosemite. According to Blackmagic the write has gone down to 246 MB/s.

I have TRIM enabled. Anyone have any ideas?

Should I reinstall OS X?

Probably worth letting the system settle for a couple of days first, then re-testing. Could well be Spotlight indexing etc in the background.
