Did anyone get the Samsung 830 256 GB when it dipped to $159.99? It was there for just a day and by the next day it was up to $189.99. Silly me, I thought it would go down even further once the Samsung 840 came out, but I guess the demand for the old generation at cheaper prices went up. I think I may try to see if I can't haggle something out with Amazon. ;)

I wanted to but by the time I decided it went back up. :(

Buy.com currently has the Crucial M4 256gb SSD for $159.99 and Newegg has the Samsung 830 for $169.99 and free shipping

Ahh, missed the $154 price drop . . . I just saw it dip down again to $169.99 and made an impulse buy since the price has been going up and down so much, and 169 was on the low-ish side of where it had been.

I feel a little crazy for having made the purchase because, while I've installed new HDDs before, I'm not an expert on SSDs and have never used one before. Still need to read more about whether to enable TRIM or not, and if so, which method to use.

I was kind of waiting to see what would happen with the 13" rMBPs in terms of possibly selling the computer I have and buying one of those, but this is definitely a better computer (mid 2012 13" MBP) for being able to do upgrades.

I'm sure this question has been asked and answered a million times, but does anyone want to offer an opinion on whether to enable TRIM or not on this drive? Does it have hardware level garbage collection and if so does that impact whether or not I should turn on TRIM?

Thanks! Looking forward to this experiment in speed!

I originally wanted a 512GB Crucial M4, but now the 512GB Samsung 830 has come down to sensible money (£335 on Amazon at the mo!), that's the one I'm after. I have a Windows partition, so my plan would be to bung the drive in, restore from a hard drive clone and then head into Windows to run the update software.

I also want to chock up on RAM whilst I do the SSD upgrade (well, since I'm in town anyway...), so I don't know whether to get 8GB for £35 on Crucial, or hold out and see how much 16GB is available for. Then my Mac is maxed out, and should last me a good few years.

Update: Ooh, 8GB DDR3 from Crucial is only just over £30, and 16GB a smidge over £60. That's come down quite a bit in the two months since I last checked!

Apparently this price hasn't hit the US yet. I'm looking for a Sammy 512, but I don't see anything under $500.

Yeah, it's come down quite steeply quite quickly - a few months ago it was about £440, now Amazon have them for around £300  This is for the Basic Kit though (they do a Notebook Kit and a Desktop Kit, but I already have a SATA caddy so I don't need them).

Installed Samsung 830 today

not SSD but just completed my OWC seagate 750GB HD... so far so good... I will upgrade in the future to SSD or wait till my next computer... Thanks guys

runs hotter?

I recently did an upgrade SSD OCZ Vertex Plus R2 120GB. Took a bit of haraning to reduce down from a 256GB drive to this, but it was good cleaning.

Everything went pretty fine, and speeds are very nice, at least 2X R/W what was there before.

but, things seem to be running HOTTER than before. Normally, the 2008 MBP would run about 120-130F with the fans at 2500, but now it's running 155-160F?

The are where the SSD is doesn't feel warm at all, actually the back of the machine feels warmer. I did some cleaning when I was in there, since the machine hadn't really been opened in FOUR YEARS, there was some dust and debris, but I thought light vacuuming it out would make things BETTER from a heating standpoint.

Hey guys, I know you guys answered this plenty of times, but i just got my new macbook pro 13 i5 and i jus ordered a 8gb ram upgrade from oxc. As for ssd im not sure which to pick im leaning towards crucial m4 or samsung 830 because of a lot of positive feedback. What ill be using my comp for is daily task like internet, web browsing, videos, and listening to music. Which will be the best for me ? Also i am planning to get a external hd if that matters.
