If the Samsung is cheaper, buy the Samsung. Also, it's generally advisable to put your spinner drive into the optical bay and the SSD where the hard drive is.

Why? There aren't any sensors in the caddy, are there? So why not let the SSD, for which you will want to turn those sensors off in the caddy and put HDD, for which you would want the sensors on, to caddy, where there are none?

The statement "it's generally advisable to put your spinner drive into the optical bay and the SSD where the hard drive is" is based on several reports of people having trouble getting an SSD to boot properly when installed in the optibay, in 2012 or 2013 MBPs, ie., SATA III compatibility issues. It does not refer to the "sensor" you mentioned, I assume you mean the SMS (sudden motion sensor). OWC has a blog posted on related issues with 2011 machines, etc.:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DDAMBS0GB/
Just to make the "sensor" issue more complex, some HD drives have SMS built in, and some don't, relying on the SMS function built into the OS, which can be turned On/Off with a terminal command. So, in theory, it would be best to have a HD with SMS built-in if that drive is installed in the optical drive bay. In actual practice, I wonder if that is an issue at all, no actual experience to judge by here.

Ah, I see, I actually wondered whether the SSD will have problems booting up from the caddy place but the sensor, or as you corrected me, SMS, seems like pretty crucial part of the drive. I wonder whether lower lifespan can be actually measured with HDD without any SMS...

I am looking at getting a Crucial M4, Samsung 840 Pro or a Vertex 4.

I'm not actually that bothered which but what I can't find within this forum is what thickness drive do you buy? 7mm, 9mm, 9.5mm? Maybe it doesn't really matter but thought I'd better check with people who have installed these already.

This would be for an early 2011 Macbook Pro 13".

Thanks.

*EDIT*

My apologies, found some info here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1364279/

Something that has also changed recently is that Crucial used to be easier to update (Samsung, as far as I know required a Windows install to update firmware) but that generally seems to be false. The latest two updates have had major problems with UEFI systems with a lot of users reporting the "easiest" way to update the SSD is to take it out and pop it in a Windows machine to update the firmware.

I haven't done anything to my Crucial M4. Running 040H firmware and not enabled TRIM either.

Everything's working fine, nice and quick. If it starts not working fine, then that's when I'll address the issue. :)

Cannot Enable TRIM

I'm not able to enable "TRIM" on my corsair neutron GTX 240 gb ssd, which is on my MBP-Mid2012(13")(OSX.10.8.3)

[TRIM ENABLER] If i slide the button to "ON", it automatically goes to "OFF"

I know the Crucial M500 are brand spankin' new, but I'm curious if anyone has gotten one and what the early verdict is? I know some other brands are great, but I'm mainly looking at the M500 for the 960GB capacity.

Anyone have an early review?

There is a user here with one.

yeahh !! it was been enabled for me for long time too..., i checked that OFF for some reason and now i'm not able to ON it :(

Try enabling trim manually. :)

That m2 form factor looks very familiar. :)

"The bank of capacitors above the controller and one of the two cache chips ensure that should there be a power failure, the drive has sufficient juice to complete any writes it is performing. This is the first drive with this feature aimed at the consumer market that I have seen."

This is pretty impressive.

Try Chameleon

Someone else said Trim Enabler has had problems after the 10.8.3 update, I am not sure if that is true or not, but as it is not working for you ....

Finally Toshiba has entered the consumer market with their SSD's. Has any one used the new Toshiba Q-series and can share their experiences? Thanks.

I've installed a Samsung 840 SSD in my 2010 Macbook Pro and I want to upgrade the firmware but I'm unaware of how to burn the ISO to a bootable disc. Does anyone know of a guide on how to do this or can someone give me directions on how to do it?

Ssd

I bought a 6g Extreme 256 SSD from OWC about 8 months ago and use it as my main and startup drive. For the last couple of months when i start up my macro would star up by its self from the Factory 1T Apple 7200 HD, AND it COULD not go into perfs to reset the SDD as the SUD. I had to keep restarting till it would start up from it, and it got worse and worse till I thought I would never again See my beloved SSD drive. SO I sent a e-mail to OWC and told them I thought it was going bad.

They told me I needed to update the firmware of the SSD and was skeptical... BUT it worked

Now I have NO reason WHY after downloading the firmware up date I had to BURN a DVD with a disk image of the update, shut down retort from that DVD and then do the update.... Seemed the long way around the barn... But it worked....:D

What would you guys recommend Crucial M500 480GB or Samsung 830 512GB. The Samsung is 5 bucks cheaper but i'm wondering if i should go with the more modern drive?

I don't think there is anything wrong with buying the 830 as long as you understand there will be no more firmware updates for it. It does have a more durable NAND than the 840 and should last a long time.

I don't know anything about the Crucial SSD, so I cannot comment on it.

Yeah the EoL status of the 830 is a bit off putting. Plus Crucial's after-sales support here is excellent. Not so sure about Samsung even more so for a drive thats been discontinued with no future firmware updates.

Looked at another way, the 830 has very mature firmware now as opposed to the newer drives. If I was looking for a drive and had to choose between the 830 and 840 series (price being close), I would go with the 830. Any bugs likely to crop up with the 830 would certainly have surfaced by now.

There is that...

Right, there isn't anything wrong with the 830 and I think it still would be a good buy if one were so inclined.
