SSD C300 128GB/256GB - New Firmware out - Upgrading

Could the extra performance be because the firmware flash effectively does a secure erase first? It'd be nice to get Xbench results between a fresh 1.0 drive and once 2.0's been flashed. (I ask because other people are saying there's not much of a performance improvement.)

I don't know if it was the format or not, I did do an extra Secure erase with disk utility (0/1 version) after the firmware update

Either way my speed problem is currently solved so I am happy I did everything what I did, I just hope it will stay like this for a while.

I just updated a C300 256gb to firmware 2 on a late 2008 MB unibody - no problems updating on the MB. The write speeds on the C300 had slowed a lot when compared to new but firmware 2 put it back to 270 mbs read and 220 mbs write.

Instructions for update?

Hi all
Any chance that anybody grabbed a copy of the firmware update instructions before they were pulled down? I've downloaded the firmware itself from the link at the start of this thread but the instructions don't come parceled in. Can anybody help me out?

Many thanks

I thought secure erasing and SSD was bad because it actually fills the drive with 0's or 1's instead of marking the cells as empty (like a freshly formatted drive). See posts here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/841182/

First, backup you hard drive, because the update will wipe it.

Then:
1) Once you burn the ISO, boot from it (by holding the C key down during startup).

2) Follow the instructions on the screen. It will start by scanning for drives, saying it can't find something, blah blah blah. Eventually, you'll get to a point where you have to type "yes" Then, a minute later, you have to type "yes again"

3) Once the update is complete, it will tell you and you'll be at a command line (A:). I had no idea what to do there, but eventually determined that I need to just hit the power button.

After this, you'll need to boot from your Snow Leopard (or MacBook Pro) install disk and reformat the drive with DiskUtility to GUID. Then, if you want:
- Disable Journaling
- Enable "noatime"
- any other peformance tweaks you're interested in doing

I think this update works fine on a Mac. All the issues others are having seem to be due to various motherboard configs that Crucial didn't test for. I think this is the first time I've heard of a command-prompt based firmware update working better on a Mac then on a PC!

Applied the firmware update last night to my C300 and it worked flawlessly.

Currently finishing restoring all the software I had initially, otherwise works smooth and don't see any problems.

any more neww of Firmware 2 flashed drives?
Wanted to know how things are going...

According to macperformance (link below, and, i remember well, also anandtech) after intense use c300 had slowdowns
http://macperformanceguide.com/SSD-RealWorld-BeforeAfter-CrucialRealSSD.html

My disk goes full and empty a lot due to movie picture editing but I have had no performance issues for now since I did the FW 2 update, before I really had performance issues going down with almost 50% and really noticeable. Right now I am a happy man and hope I can stay like that.

Latest result, done a few days ago.

Anyone here have the 128GB C300? If so, can you PLEASE post your xbench drive results.

thanks

Thanks kryptticAZ

Thanks a million for your hep Krypttic. That update was ridiculously easy! :)

Btw, for anyone else trying this update, you'll need to force-eject the CD after you've upgraded by click and hold the mouse pad with two fingers on boot. That one had me stumped for a bit after the update because the SSD was blank and the firmware update cd was stuck in the DVD drive! :)

Firmware Files for C300

Does anyone have a link to the firmware files? I just got a C300 to replace my Samsung TorqxM28 in my 13" MBP and would like to upgrade the drive before I restore. Of course the files are gone from the Crucial site...

UPDATE : Ignore this, the file link is on the first post! http://www.crucial.com/firmware/0002/C300_FW0002.zip
They've still got it on the server...

Going by xbench or quickbench is silly. It tests a very small part of the SSD and read/write speeds vary from one place to the next. You can see this by taking a somewhat-used drive and running xbench five times in a row. The results will vary a lot, so posting a single screen shot of xbench is pretty pointless.
