I wouldn't know if it's the problem or not (I'm still on my 2009 UMBP w/firmware 0002 - no problem, the 2011 model is on it's was at the moment).

OK, the i7 is here now, and the C300 (still on 0002) is running fine at SATA-III speeds after a successful transplant (had to re-install OS X, but all apps & user data was retained anyway). Peaking around 315MB/s sequential read. There have been many stories of woe - FWIW I have a 15" MBP.

For people who are so worried about trim you know you can clone your drive, wipe it, and restore from the clone and the drive is as good as new.

Unless you have TRIM enabled via the TRIM hack, this does absolutely nothing. Without TRIM enabled, the SSD cells that have been previously used will still show as used and writes to those cells will be slower than a write to a "fresh" cell.

Unless you use this method to wipe the SSD.

Sadly, while many of us have the smarts to go through these procedures, they are still a pain in the rear. Just another reason to stick with Apple stock SSDs - or go without - until this is all sorted out, despite the small downside in price and performance.

The philosophy of "it just works" goes a long way in my book.

My 2011 15" MBP arrives tomorrow and i still can't figure out what SSD to buy. I suppose OWC would be the safest for Sata 3 but I've had some customer service issues with them and so have others I know. So I'm not exactly pumped to give them my money. I have a 13" MBA with 256GB drive and I can't go back to spinning metal.

The latest post to MPG seems to cinch it for me: evidently the new OWC SATA 3 SSD, while a great performer, really sucks down the watts. I think I'll settle on the stock Apple SSD and get better battery life.

I'll be curious to see who runs battery benchmarks with both devices.

Users tried both SSD with SATA2 & SATA3, have you noticed the difference?
I'm buying MBP 13" soon, but yet to decide which type of SSD to buy with. I hear some say SATA3 is blazing fast, while some say it's unnoticeable in real life use. Also concerning about compability, altohugh I heard C400 work like a charm.

Here's the one I have. I had it originally in my 2010 13" 2.4 C2D MBP and now it happily resides in my 2011 13" 2.3 i5 MBP.

I had bought it from Costco though for $160 after MIR. It was supposed to just be the V100, but when the order came, it had a note in it from Kingston that they didn't have enough stock for the V100 and were upgrading users to this model. I then also ordered the 64GB version for my wife's MBP and it was upgraded as well! This S2B version is nice that it came with brackets for a desktop if I wanted to as well as an external hard drive enclosure that can be used for the stock hard drive that was replaced with the SSD.

Anyhow, here's the Newegg link since it reflects the actual model that I received.

The problem is the more I read from HardMac, OWC site, MacPerformance Guide etc, the more unsure I am about putting some hard earned $$ into buying a 3rd party Sata 3 SSD into my 2011 MBP 17.

It's a Russian Roulette situation. All sizes seem to have issues.

Some rectified it by changing SATA cables, but does mean improved performance for everyone who tried changing.

Even OWC's shield may not work for some 17.

Apple gave us SATA 3 cable but they themselves only ship out SSDs which are SATA 2. So to play safe, I bought an Intel 320 160GB to test and it has worked smoothly thus far, though I feel it is like putting a Hyundai engine into a Porsche. Stupid huh.

Sorry OWC. I have to cancel my 6G Pro SSD order until these issues are settled.

Interesting. Please keep it up to date.

Thanks.

Holy thread revival!

Nearly all the information in this thread is incorrect. The MacBook Pro has had two EFI updates since the last post in here, there's a new OS out, and dang near every SSD mentioned has had at least two firmware updates.

Honestly, it's probably easier to just start a new thread listing all the current information than try to get the OP to update his post.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm new to all this SSD stuff ha

I just installed the OWC data doubler and put my crucial M4 SSD in the optibay. When I booted it up, it was extremely slow and I got the beach ball every few seconds. I did not wipe it before installing it, and it had Lion already on it. I do have the EFI firmware update. It is also named Macintosh HD. Is that confusing it? The HDD in the HD slot is running fine. What's going on? I will install Lion and wipe the SSD to make sure it works OK.
