Thanks for your help, I am trying a calibration
The built-in batteries in the newer Mac unibody notebooks come pre-calibrated and do not require regular calibration like the removable batteries in older Apple notebooks.

Someone on Experts Exchange suggested I try a " System Mangement Controller reset", is this sound advice for increasing battery life?
Resetting the SMC can address some issues, but it does not increase battery life.

I really encourage you to read the Apple Notebook Battery FAQ.

Reading through it now, I really appreciate your help.
I will try getting some info from Coconut Battery & put the older drive back in and to some testing and comparisons.

My vigilance paid off, expecting the possibility that Apple would discontinue the 17" MBP I've enjoyed for years, I was lucky enough to buy one of the last of them.

I finally had time last weekend to replace the standard hard drive with a 512GB Samsung 830 SSD, just like I've had in my 15" 2011 MBP for months now.

I'm happy to report that after a full week of long days with the new 17" & SSD, I'm noticing improved battery life. While its not dramatic, it is in line with the improvement I noticed after making the same upgrade on the 15".

Although I've got other brands of SSD's in my other laptops, none are as fast efficient & easy on the batteries like the 830's are. Its a very satisfying result.
