Not at all. Just the amount you want and if you have the money or not.

64 and 128GB has the slowest speeds on most SSDs. 64GB being the slowest.
256GB and up usually has the fastest speeds.

Ah, good. I had misunderstood an earlier post then. I do need the extra space and right now I have to keep my photos on my NAS as opposed to simply backing them up to it. (I have an MBA with an OWC 6G 256GB SSD.) 256 would let me change that, and still have a lot of space left.

Thanks for the reply!

Hi Guys, so after a few days of reading and learning about SSD's, I see that the Crucial M4 and the standard Samsung 840 are very similar.

Depending on sale prices, what "real-world" difference would I see by using the Samsung Pro SSD versus the M4 or regular 840?

I do however want to remove the superdrive and put my current sata2 180gig Vertex2 in the optical bay, and put my new sata3 SSD in the main bay and do nightly internal clones with Super Duper or CCC.

Would the Samsung Pro make a big difference (due to higher writing speeds?)

Or would all three of these SSD's give me similar performance for general computer use and nightly backups (to the internal optical bay SSD)

Thanks for all replies, IAN.

I bought a 256 840 Pro 2 weeks ago from NewEgg - they had it for $200. Couldn't pass it up :) Even if I don't notice it, makes me "feel better."

As far as keeping up with the deals, I used this ...

I know what you mean, no one wants to regret not buying the better SSD (840 Pro) to save only 30-40 dollars, but why spend it if it doesn't really make any real-world difference other than bragging rights.

Here's a link to a comparison between the M4 and the 840 Pro...

The 840 Pro beats the M4 in 98% of all the benchmarks, and beats the M4 by a substantial margin (50% or more)

It makes me reconsider getting a 840 Pro since it is only $20-30 more

IAN.

If the real world speeds were really that different, many of us like myself wouldn't have gone for the M4. Benchmarks are one thing, everyday use is another. I notice no difference in SSD response from my M4 to the 840 I tried out in my friends Mac.

I agree partially with you, however there are differences between various SSD's.

Was your friends SSD's a standard 840 or a 840 Pro?

From what I can see the M4 and the standard 840 are very similar in specs and benchmarks, yet the 840 Pro really is a different beast. Since I will be using it for the next 2-3 years, I don't want to regret my purchase, yet it is all very confusing :)

Sorry, it was a Pro, My early base 2011 13" beat his 2012 13" in our GeekBench tests so I feel good about my decision as it seems to be super smooth. BlackMagic Utility shows slower writes but the reads are about the same and most of the time people tend to access files way more than they write them. I'm not trying to steer you either way. Just stating personal experience, I happen to like Samsung products as well but the M4 really is great. I also haven't touched the firmware since I purchased it 9 or 10 months ago (000F).

Thanks a million for your reply. I am really confused now :(

I like the M4 for Mac OSX firmware upgradeability, price, reliability. I like the 840 Pro for the R&W speeds, specs, reliability, etc... yet not for firmware upgrades, nor the added price :(

TOTALLY CONFUSED lollll

Decisions, decisions, decisions.. :)

I ended up going for the standard 840 SSD since I don't do a lot of write intensive work.

I have now received my Samsung 840 250g SSD and have installed it in the main HD bay. It works very well and a definite increase compared to my older sata2 Vertex2 180g SSD.

Anyone else put a 840 SSD in their machines?
