I have a mid 2010 mbp and recently installed 840 EVO ssd. I am aware of the trim enabler issue but is there any other way I can speed a now slowing SSD?

Run the Performance Restoration firmware update for your 840 Evo.

Since your Mac has SATA2, the max speeds you can expect should be around ~300 MB/s.
