The 'haha 5MBs difference isn't worth getting upset about' posts seem to be missing the point. 5MBs difference on a test like this means they've got identical performance - The sandisks are much slower than the samsung parts and neither generation of machine imposes any limit on the storage speed.

Is there going to be a part lottery or is this a permanent supplier choice? One is clearly better than the other.

Please quote what I said and not just "..." next time.

I agree the article misses the point. But what it does say is interesting. The thing is when you buy a Mac, it's a gamble as to which SSD brand you get. There's no way to specify a good SSD brand with better read and write speeds. And fast speeds is one reason why people buy SSDs.

If people are seriously disappointed at +/- 5 MB/s when speeds are 700MB/s+.. there are some other serious issues..

Depends on your needs for the device. Though I'll admit, the chances of a MBA being used for constant demands on high volumes of data is probably limited... then again, I work with lots of BIG photoshop files and VMs... the extra speed on 20MB and 30GB files is probably going to be noticed at some point... faster speed also assists in rendering, movie encoding, etc... but 5MB is nothing, just as how it's A-OK to run a computer at 100C all the time because Intel says the chip can handle up to 105 before it forces itself to shut down...

Still, people see Apple and think "quality", "standards", "ecosystem that just works". Slopping in different HDD and SSD vendors defeats the purpose of those claims. Each semi-annual refresh model is standardized on various components. Why are HDDs/SDDs the odd component out? Apple can standardize on one brand and model, but that would not guarantee 100% results across each unit of product made.

FWIW, just got a BTO 2014MBA with 512Gig SSD and it has a Samsung...

Since I use my machine for actual day to day business, I'm not that concerned about absolute speed domination testing so I'll characterize my new Air thusly... FECKIN' BLISTERINGLY QUICK!

Oh and 'light and portable'... like 'Air'... did anybody mention that? ;)
