ssd swap - high usage of Terabytes Written

How old are you? You've got a long wait.
 
Just to be sure folks - even if turning off the spotlight indexing is kinda way to solve the issue, what can go wrong with disabled indexing?

I tried to find something on the web, but lack of time currently to dig more 😛

1. same tools
2. same programs
3. same projects
4. same work-on-time

Intel MacBook is running BigSur for couple of months. I did some tests couple of days ago and TBW was barely moving after few hours of work, while my Mac mini m1 is creating ~~300 GBW per day.


edit:
If you are working with big files (movies, photos) than TBW can rise very fast no matter what SoC you are using. But if you are working mostly with text files, coding - it shouldn't generate hundreds of gigabytes per day. Just my opinion, I know 😉

I have just read it and a few words about this article from me - `it tells nothing`

There are plenty people here who doesn't have this issue at all. Some of them have 1TBW after 2-3 weeks, some 5TBW, and others 40 TBW.

What the article is saying - that he (author) doesn't have this issue 😉

if you buy simple thing.. get 16 GB ram and used external disk if Mac mini. The reason anything happen you got backup.
 
I am not working with big files. Most of my work uses a browser.

That's between you and Apple. The here and now is how to avoid destroying your HW until Apple resolve this showstopper. Disabling spotlight indexing is a small price to pay for that as there are alternatives (Alfred, Quicksilver, etc).

I could miss your post (sorry if I did), but what is your TBW and life-time @ intel Mac?

I have ~~47.6 TBW after almost 2 years and ~~4 months now.
 
So small update.

My typical work desktop.
- 3 browsers
- mail
- affinity designer
- google ads editor
- slack
- whatsapp
- bbedit
- filezilla
- calendar
- onenote

Spotlight and iCloud Drive are by default on. Never changed a thing.

So for me it looks like 23h DELTA in data written: 0,1 TB.

For sure. Any current issues are all software related. AppleCare is covering me until almost December of 2023. I’m so excited for these (seemingly) minor issues to be resolved with an update or two (or maybe with macOS 12).

The Apple SoC is their future. They’re not going to go thru all of this just to scrap it and say “oh well, looks like there’s too many issues”

Outside of the ranters who are throwing around terms like “destroying your HW” and “showstoppers” most of us have a pretty good perspective on this and are enjoying the M1 as an outstanding platform.

And what a future it is. There's a 'Windows Tax' now.

Assuming the 256SSD lasts for 750TBW, that's still a long time, even with the high writes.

Every M1 is a beta test unto itself.

If by 'Windows Tax' you mean that we can also run the ARM version of Windows 10 virtually, sure?

As for the TBW issue, when this first started to gain attention I noticed on Feb 23 my TBW was at 22.7 TB, which seems like a LOT! Looking today I'm at 24.0 TB. I've been keeping track almost daily and haven't changed my workflow. I do a lot of recording in Logic Pro X and some light editing in FCPX.. I've had a few issues with some 3rd party app compatibility, but most of those issues have been addressed save for a few non-showstopper type of bugs. Seems more like my iPad Pro 11in was the beta test for this M1 MBP.. IMO.

Windows Tax, meaning that a Windows computer of a given benchmark performance now costs more than the equivalent Mac, instead of less.

For the M1 Mac "SSDs", that seems to be more like 1.5 PBW for 256GB.
