might be picking up a used 2015 27” 5K Retina iMac and was interested in what options, if any, I have for upgrading the 1tb HD to an ssd. What size ssd does it use? Standard 2.5 or 3.5? Or is it a special Apple ssd. Any special adapters or anything needed? Recommend SSDs?

Thanks

seems like a solid guide, ill be sure to use it. But it doesn't seem to say anything about size options of the SSD or where to get them or adapters i might need etc. anyone have any good sites to recommend?? OWC seems pretty pricey for RAM and SSDs.
[doublepost=1510700059][/doublepost]what connection does the slot for the SSD use? im guessing this 1TB SSD in my current MBP won't work with this iMac? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LJO86NE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Save yourself trouble, time and money.
Add an EXTERNAL USB3 SSD, and set it up to be your external boot drive.

You'll eliminate any risk of breaking something "getting inside", and you'll see boot/run speeds that are about 85% of what you would get if you installed a SATA SSD drive internally.

I Have Replace my Hard Disk with a new 2TB SSD Sandisck.
I had the KIT from the OWC wich contains the adapter for the disk with the thermal sensor.
I am very satisfied with this change! Also it is very very easy to open the imac and change the HD.
Do not fear of opening the iMac.
I have done this 6 times! (iMac 27" LATE 2015)

SATA SSD's are 2.5". Get whichever SSD you want, do some research some are faster than others. In a Mac I tend to lean toward the higher end models like Samsung EVO's and Pros due to the effort required in installing/replacing them. I would also recommend plugging it into a windows PC first and updating its firmware if required before installing it into a Mac.

OWC sells a kit with all the tools, adapters, sensors, adhesives, etc...

Follow the video instructions on that page.

It's not too difficult if you are feeling up too it. Directly connected to the SATA interface on the logic board will minimize overhead and maximize speed of the SSD vs external options.
