With Apple being the largest SSD purchaser in the world (and therefore in the best position to negotiate the best economy of scale on a per unit basis), isn't the price of SSD upgrades too high?

Just wait for a few years. When the first hard drives came out a 10gb harddrive was $10,000. In a few years the prices of SSD will drop and it will be standard on all computers.
