My school computers use ssh to complete any file transfers and such. I am trying to use terminal to access the the server from home.

this is what I tried so far:

    simi-computer:~ simi$ ssh -l username example.com

this allows me access to the general server but when I try to access a specific site, it returns:

ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host

The fact that i can access the general server indicates that its not a connection issue or a wrong command. But I access the general and the specific site on a regular basis from school so it is not like I don't have authorization. Quite frankly I am at a loss as to what the problem could be. Help please!

What do you mean by accessing a specific site?

I would speak to your school's IT department. They should be able to help you.

    Try

ssh <user>@<server> or "man ssh" for usage.
