stack configuration

Using Leopard and like the way my document's stack is displayed when I click on the documents icon on the dock. It shows the documents in an arc on my screen.

I placed my applications folder on the dock and it displays as a folder on the display rather than an arc.

Is there a reason for this and can this be changed so I see the items in my applications displayed in an arc fashion?
