I mainly use multiple desktops on Mac and then swipe between them to get to apps or sets of apps that I have opened. So far I haven't really found much use for Stage Manager in my workflow.

So, turned SM on. I'm using Safari. Need to add a few things up that are on the site I'm looking at. I click on the calculator in the dock and Safari "disappears". So what's that all about or am I using it wrong?

Why not use the Dock for that? It shows you the currently opened apps..

Mission Control? I just never used it, and the dock I can't see very well, although it's essential.

Most people don't want to think about this stuff, and the less you have to think about, the better.

The key term here is majority. Most people might just warm to this. Time will tell. I like it so far, and am actually using it's utility.

But on an iPad? I'm not sure about that. The trackpad is needed. Maybe with the AMK for iPad.

I'm sticking to altTab and mission control. SM could have been nice, but it's still not allowing quick switching between windows of the same application (excel, word, microsoft edge profiles).

Stage Manager probably is the most annoying feature on new MacOS Ventura.

I immediately turned it off but I think it's still eating up some memories which is already precious since Apple only give us 8GB

I'm confused--it's OFF by default on all three of my Macs that I upgrade to Ventura . . . based on your post it sounds like it was ON by default for you?

That's exactly how I work, but I thought I'd give Stage Manager a go today for a normal working day and see how I got on.

I think I like it...

But I think that's because I like using Spaces. Instead of having a space for messaging apps & mail, one for my work for client A, one for Client B etc... one for Safari... I'm grouping those in to Stage Manager stacks (what are they called?) and trying that. I like that I can "see" them all on the left hand side and that I can even see the real-time activity - just makes them a bit more "present" in my thinking.

So far, I think I prefer having them all on the left hand side of a single space rather than in separate spaces. But I think this is just because of how my mind works when working at my desktop with its big ultra wide screen etc. I don't think I would use Stage Manager on my laptop or my iPad.

I'd say my initial reaction is "pleasantly surprised" given all I'd read and heard about the feature.

After playing with it for a week now, I can see potential in it, but in its current state it just lacks too many features and has too many shortcomings.

I think it's a nice feature to reduce clutter for people who like to use lots of apps in windows mode on a big screen. Personally, I'm using most of my apps in fullscreen mode, so I don't find it useful.

I think Stage Manager on Ventura is great, and I love it. I am using a single 27” display and prior to stage manager, all my open windows would just be haphazardly open over each other, and maybe there were other ways to manage the clutter, but Stage Manager has been a game changer, and once you use if for a hot second, is pretty intuitive.

I think a lot of the bad press on stage manager has been the iPad implementation. The reason iPad stage manager sucks is that on an iPad, apps always are full screen. When you turn on stage manager, all of the sudden they arent, and it’s kind of pointless. Sure you can drag the corner out to full screen, but that defeats the stage manager.

So Stage manager works for me on my Mac Studio because I never open apps in full screen, and doesnt really work for my iPad, because I always want full screen on the iPad.

I used StageManager for the first time today and I think it's quite nice. I only wish it would take less space. It would be really nice to have an option to hide it or swipe it in from the left side. Similar like swiping the widget area in from the right side. Especially with trackpads this still would be quite fluid.

There is an option to hide/show it similar to the dock. Toggle on/off the option "Recent applications" in the stage manager options.

Ah, nice. Thank you. That's better.
Although it does not appear when then window is covering the area, and only if I click on to the desktop. I mean I get, why. That would be some clutter, I guess. But to have. a real dock like/swipe in function would be a nice addition. Thanks for the tip though. Much more fun to use.

I can't switch to Ventura yet b/c the security software my university uses hasn't been updated yet. But from the videos I've seen about Stage Manager (SM), it seems like a nice feature for those using a single small screen (laptop or iPad).

However, I'm not sure how well it would work for me, because I use three monitors in an extended desktop configuration and, with certain exceptions, I don't keep track of which window I've opened in which monitor.

That's not an issue with Mission Control since, with a single action, I can see all the windows in a given app, or all the windows total, across all my monitors at once. By contrast, SM doesn't currently have the capability to set up a single SM that works across all monitors. If it did, I might anchor SM to the LHS of my L monitor. Instead, IIUC, when you activate SM, you get a separate SM for each monitor. Thus if you don't know what montitor the window you want is on, you'd might have to check all three SM's before you found it.

I'm now using this daily on my single ultrawide display and really like it for my workflow, but I do need to look and see what settings I can change.

It still seems a bit buggy though.... Occasionally all of the windows in Stage Manager on the left, will all start to vibrate like mad as if they're not sure whether to come in or out! I have to turn it off and back on to fix that. The other annoying bug will see me switch to another set of apps and every single window in every single group has gone tiny!

Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I don't mind that windows overlap haphazardly. If I left them open, it's probably something I'll look at in the near future. If not, I'll close it or hide it.
Personally what's frustrating is how Stage Manager deals with multiple windows. There is no situation that I want groups of windows to snap the way SM prescribes.

I love having windows be about 3/4 full screen so I can still see the window beneath it and/ or some of the desktop so I can drag files. SM only hurts in those situations.

One feature from Windows that I'd like (if implemented differently) that would be helpful is windows that snap to edges of the screen. Slack is the most frustrating chat app because it can't be tall and narrow which is exactly the shape I want it to be and would mostly be delightful if snapped to the edge of the screen.

I think in a nutshell that stage manager is for the Mac users who wouldn’t be considered “power users”. Those who have never seen expose and other features despite owning a Mac for years because that’s just not how they use computers.

And that’s completely okay. I welcome easy to grab concepts for the perpetual aunts and uncles out there who are exactly that type of user.

Craig said explicitly that this isn’t a replacement for all the current management features, but an addition. Behind the PR lines it seems Stage Manger is an easy to grasp solution aimed at “computer users who don’t computer” which is precisely why it’s so hard for hardcore techies (because we are people on a computer forum that already separates us from the (probably) 95% of people who just use computers but don’t understand them) to wrap their minds around.

I keep trying it. I use spaces, and have apps such as Mail and Firefox zoomed to fill the screen while showing the menubar and my dock (which I have on the left).

Due to this, I can't see the stage manager stages icon things as they're covered by my zoomed apps. As I'm using my 13" MBA, I don't want to lose width by shrinking my app windows down so I can see the SM icons.

I'm going to keep it enabled for a day or so and see how it goes, but I'll probably turn it off. Again.

I'm a big fan of Spaces, and the ctrl-n method of switching between them.

I try to use SM, but have annoying bug. When I use Stage Manager and click Cmd+` (switch between windows) in Chrome it starts to behave like crazy. It happens only when I use SM, if I click Cmd+` without SM everything is fine. Did anybody have such a problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Had another go. Nope. Am I doing something wrong? I need to add a range of numbers on a web page I'm looking at in Safari so I click the Calc in the dock and Safari moves to the side. Surely that can't be right?
