Seems like Apple intends to replace/deprecate mission control with stage manager, like how they replaced expose with mission control. And stage manager reduces quite a bit of your desktop space (although you can hide things). But the UI design seems to be better suited for a large screen devices. I am using a 23.5" monitor with my mac mini, and even side-by-side already feels somewhat cramped. I cannot imagine if I used stage manager. I wonder if we will see the return of 27" (or larger) iMac? Thoughts?

I think Stage Manager will push larger screen iPads that support it if anything. Besides if you want more space on a current monitor just change the settings. On my current 24” iMac with “perfect” eyesight and monitor an arms length away I can see what’s going on if I use the highest resolution option but it’s uncomfortable ha.

I hope not, because Stage Manager is in no way a replacement for Mission Control.

The latter was essentially Expose and Spaces mushed together and you didn't really lose any functionality. Stage Manager on the other hand is in all aspects too limited to replace Mission Control.

Doubtful. Stage Manager is first and foremost a feature for iPads, i.e. even smaller screens. That it ended up in macOS as headline feature reeks of Apple not having any other new ideas for this system.

I can't quite imagine using Stage Manager on my Mac... a solution in search of a problem. I don't need a feature to help me manage windows when I can just... manage my windows like I have my entire life? Guess I'll see closer to launch... I'm not risking a beta on any of my devices this early.

Agreed with @Janichsan above... betcha they slipped that in to bolster the list of new macOS features for marketing.

Since I almost never have more than 5 or six windows open at the same time, Stage Manager can (and probably will) be a replacement for Mission Control for me.

True, macOS doesn't actually stage manager because there's mission control already. But I believe Apple wants to unify the UI language between macOS and iPadOS.

I certainly won't rule out that it could be a replacement for some people, but for many others it would not. For me, Stage Manager certainly wouldn't even be close to be sufficient.

That's what I'm afraid of. A Mac is not an iPad. Forcing the UI of one on the other only results in the worst of all worlds.

Personally, I fail to see the need to have hundreds of windows open at the same time, preferably scattered between a dozens of displays. That would be way to unorganized for me.
But then again, there are many people who put every single app available in the dock. 🤷‍♂️

If you need to imagine that this is the only case where Stage Manager is too limited, and that everyone for whom this is the case is a disorganised slob, feel free to do so. It's not my job to explain every different use case to you.

As it is, Stage Manager is already too limited when you need a rotating selection of maybe three or four apps in varying combinations on your screen(s) at the same time.

I will judge that, after I have used it for a while. 👍
Also, I will provide feedback to Apple, if I believe a certain functionality is missing or could be better implemented. This is still the first beta.

I can see your point. And thinking about it, is it possible the concept of Mission Control / multiple desktops is sort of lost on the masses? I feel like it probably is. In which case, this might be a good option for those more typical folks who don't quite "get" Mission Control but also want to better organize / manage their windows.

Still probably a pass for me. But hey, I'm happy to be wrong and eat my words later! Haha.

To me stage manage seems like a sign of VR headset. The interface is wasteful which would not matter much on borderless VR screen. It looks like a convenient way to organise multiple windows in 3D space, moving away from windows scattered across 2D monitors.
I think it’s a first sign of moving from 2D to 3D interface. Probably first version of VR interface will have a lot of 2D parts similar to first computers having 1D (separated by line breaks) interface identical to a piece of paper.
The collaboration features: freedom board, live sharing of tab groups in safari also seems like preparation for VR. You can’t really show your screen to others in VR so some feature is needed to facilitate it.

It’s just another way to deal with window cluttering. It doesn’t replace anything, just is another tool. No harm in that. Don’t have to use it.
