So I had an S4 space gray aluminum model that I just traded up for the S4 SBSS model. For some reason, and I know it’s just optics because the casing size is the same on both models, the SS model seems thicker where the aluminum model seemed thinner. I was just in a store as well and thought the same thing seeing the space gray aluminum sitting next to the SBSS model. Again, I know they are the same size but does anyone else have this perception?

Only way to find out is with calipers.

Otherwise you’re just confusing stainless steel being more dense than aluminum for “thickness.”

Your perception is likely based on the weight, because they also are two different metals as well. 316L Stainless can have a thicker composition, where as the 7000 series aluminum is lighter and not as dense as the stainless is. Again, as you noted, it’s based on perception.
