I went from aluminum series 6 to Hermes ss series 7. I don't regret this decision one bit.

I tried out the aluminum for one year, I liked and used the watch daily, so I figured why not go a little premium, and I'm glad I did. The glass makes all the difference doesn't it?

The only thing I don't do with my ss AW is sleep tracking. The heaviness of the watch would make me sleepless. This actually has had a positive impact on my sleep quality because I don't worry about how many hours I logged. :)

Is the difference in weight that significant? I've only ever worn the aluminum watch, so I have no personal experience with the ss, but I haven't noticed the weight being a significant factor when people compare their experiences with them in this forum.

To me the SS models are worth it if:

1. You’re planning to keep it for at least three years or pass it down.

2. You don’t care about the resale value.

The stainless steel makes the watch “feel” like a premium watch and weigh like a premium watch. Since I never wear my Rolex or Chanel or Chopard to bed, I don’t wear my ss to bed either.

I’m very sensitive to weight or jewelry on me, perhaps because I have very small wrists. And I already have trouble sleeping.

To others, it may not be an issue. I wish you could order one and try. Totally subjective. :)

The difference between the two is around 1/5th of a t-shirt, or 2 US$ quarters, or 2.5 sheets of paper, or 10 paper clips.

You are right I could try it if I were really that curious. But while your remark made me curious, I'm not *that* curious. Nowadays I don't ever go anywhere nice, so don't have any use for premium accessories. And since the aluminum watch is functionally the same as ss, I can't justify the extra cost for the ss. So I don't think I'd ever consider buying an ss in the near future. But if my circumstances ever change, it's good to know about your experience with the ss, especially since I also have tiny wrists. I'd be sure to try wearing it for a full day and night before committing to keeping one! ;)

They age at exactly the same rate as aluminum Apple Watches.
I think that’s their point. I believe they’re saying that because Apple watches will inevitably become obsolete at some point, paying for upgraded materials isn’t worth the added price, whereas a traditional watch can last forever and so premium materials could be worth the added cost.

Or I completely misunderstood what they were saying.

No, I'm pretty sure you're correct. I was merely commenting on what they actually said.

I've only owned one AW, series 5, SSSB and after 2 years, it still looks like I took it out of the box. Granted, I have a white-collar job and wear long sleeves 97.5% of the time, so your mileage may vary, but it has been awesome. I don't know about the weight as I don't have anything to compare it to, but I am no "Arnold" and it is negligible to me, so take that for what it's worth. ?

It’s personal preference I think. If I scratched the screen of my watch (which I haven’t in 2 years of owning it), I don’t think it would affect my user experience. I appreciate many here look at these electronics in a different way perhaps to the average consumer, but I don’t think about it too much. I have been fine paying premiums for watches in the past but I know I will appreciate them for many years. The Apple Watch is a temporary gadget and the thought of paying £600+ for a SS version just doesn’t do it for me personally. My wife has scratched her watch quite a bit but you’d have to get very close to see it and she isn’t at all bothered. It works fine, the scratches don’t affect its functionality or use in any way. This is hers:

It’s dumped in a drawer after 3 or 4 years and the scratches aren’t going to make any difference. I say enjoy them for the limited time they are relevant

That Milanese Loop certainly did a number on your wife’s watch.

It may have done or the fact she tends to hit it into things quite a lot. It hasn’t affected its functionality or appearance though unless you look very closely for any scratches. That’s the difference between a Mac Rumours tech enthusiast and others that buy these devices.

This is my thinking too. If the SS was £400-450 then I might consider trying it, but it’s £600+. That extra cost for essentially the same Watch just doesn’t sit right for me personally. It’s a smartwatch at the end of the day and it’s what it does that is matters first and foremost. I appreciate some get satisfaction by the perception of the SS looking premium and feeling premium to them and that’s great, but there’s a reason why there is a range of choices the Apple offer.

I bought an AW series 4 SS for 400€ while series 6 was launched. I agree with who sustain that the extra cost for the new model is too much: 8-900 € for the same function and only better material isn’t worth it. But I have to admit that the SS is, in my opinion, more beautiful than aluminium. My 2 cents.

If you don't care about resale value, why would you keep it for at least three years?

Timeframe is meaningless. Keep it for one year or five years. It's about personal preference rather than cost. :)

Alu watches, especially in better colors than silver and black (and the new ones tones), are more elegant than shiny ones (stainless steel) and lighter.
The upgraded release of matte alu watches are Titanium watches (sorry for just two colors), but there aren’t oem titanium bands, obviously with sapphire glass and also lighter than stainless steel watches.
Upgraded release for stainless steel watches were the ceramic Edition, shiny, less prone to scratch, lighter, more resistant, with sapphire but until now seems them were an Ive obsession (truly missed for me).
Nike/Hermes watches are only alu/stainless steel watches sponsoring by others, hope there will be also Coke Watch, KFC Watch and others so everyone could be payed to be a testimonial.
In my experience glass screen of alu watch is good enough, while the case is more softer (but it’s an Apple bug until now also for Macs, iPads and iPhones) than other materials.

It’s quite literally the opposite for the Nike. You pay the same money for the Nike version but get a strap that may be more useful when exercising, along with watch faces and an app that may also be more useful than exercising. But if you choose not to use them you don't have to. Again, you paid the same money.

A similar argument can be made for the Hermes brand where you get the better quality leather straps and the exclusive watch faces. Economically it's not as open and shut, but it's still not at all as absolute as you present it.

But the Nike version only comes in two colours. The new colours are not available.

I tend to look for deals around xmas on the previous SS model. I managed to get the SSSB5 last Jan for £320. It means I don't have the latest and greatest but that sapphire screen is nice to have.

That’s a good approach and one I considered last time I upgraded with the S5. I nearly bought an S4 SS but in the end I fancied the Nike version. That is one good thing in your position as the SS cost drops like a stone in just one year.

Unlike the other SS colors, the scratches on a Silver SS can be buffed out to new with a Cape Cod cloth so you can go ahead and move that into the Pros column 😉
Have you used Cape Cod before on your SS AW?

If so, what were your results?

Thanks.

I had a Silver SS S3 and S5 and for S6 I got the natural Ti..... I really like the natural Ti and don't regret my decision but am planning on switching back to the silver SS S7. I miss the the SS timeless look and how it goes with literally and band, plus the scratches can be easily removed and look back to new with the cape cod cloth.
Have you personally used the Cape Cod cloths on your SS AW?

If so, what were your results?

Did they remove all scratches?

Thanks.
