I agree that it's too thick for insert 7, but what makes you say its not thick enough for insert 5? It's definitely quite a bit looser and obviously doesn't sit quite as upright because of it, but won't it still work if you're not worried about the aesthetics? I guess i'm just curious what your concerns were as i've been using mine this way and don't want to cause it any harm from the loose fit.

I no longer have my rMBP or the Book Arc, but I remember trying the size 5 insert and it did not fit at all, just slid right through.

Hmm, I'm having no issues with the Speck SeeThru Satin and the #5 insert other than the fit isn't as tight. Can you explain what you mean by it slid right through? What about it made you find it unusable? I'm just trying to figure out whether I should continue using it in this manner. Thanks for your help!

I think your post actually explains the difference. You are using the SeeThru case which is thicker than the SmartShell I was using. What I mean by "slid right through" was that the opening for the #5 insert was too large and the rMBP with SmartShell installed slid right through to the bottom of the table the stand was sitting on. The #5 insert did not hold my rMBP at all.

I still don't fully understand what you mean. Even if no case were installed on the rMBP, I'm seeing that it would still be too wide to fit through either insert and touch the table below. It would even be too wide to fit through the stand itself without any insert.

I guess I don't really have anymore to add. I just remember that when I had it the #5 insert was too large and the #7 insert was too tight when trying to use my rMBP with SmartShell installed. If you have the items yourself I'm not really sure what you are needing to know since you can test everything yourself.

I appreciate all of your help, you seem to be the only other person I can find with experience on the matter so I was just trying to understand how it wouldn't work for you and would for me. I do have all of the items and everything seems to be fine to me. I would think the SmartShell would work the same as the SeeThru even being slightly thinner, and by work the same I mean not fall through to the desk below but just fit more loosely.
