Standard Mac Progs open but are not responsive?

Hi all. I am using an iMac Retina 5K with Yosemite 10.10.3. For some reason all my standard mac programs like Calendar, App Store, Messages etc. are opening but then they are not responsive to anything and I can't close them unless I force quit. Been happening for a few days now and I have no updates pending. I think it might have started when I updated with Photos.

Any ideas? driving me crazy!

Repair permissions in Disk Utility, and if that doesn't work reinstall the OS.
