Getting Standby mode to function has been convoluted and weird. Half the time it does not turn on at all. Then if it does, it turns off on it’s own after a while, despite setting it up not to do so. I wake up to check the time and it’s off...defeats the whole purpose. Stranger still, the always on setting description says it‘s for turning the screen off?.…this is a cool feature but there is much room for refinement.

Sort of ambiguous right?
My guess is that Apple means the General Always On Function here.
If it is set to On, it's showing the background or Clock or whatever on your Lockscreen at any time.
It would also (intelligenty) turn your Standby screen to Off
So you would need the StandBy Option 'Always On' to circumvent that.

At the same time, when applied:
It's been very erratic using StandBy
Last night for some reason it was the first time that StandBy worked like it should. It never turned Off

Edit 9-29: Sorry to say it stopped working again

Mine on for more than a few mins now. Very first time it stayed on all night. Great feature if it worked. 15PM Here.

Yes, I had that once too. Not exactly sure why this sometimes happens. Perhaps some System learning involved.
It only adds to the chaos, no lasting fix.
Apple will have to change its policy about AOD for it to work properly.

I am having issues with Standby also, so will follow this thread.

When I first got the phone I could not get it to enter Standby. That may have been operator error.

After I did get Standby to turn on, I could not get it to stay on in a dark room. It would stay on in a bright room, but when the lights went out it would dim and then go completely out is less than a minute.

Apple phone support had me turn off Standby and Motion to Wake, do a hard reset, then turn Standby on again while leaving Motion to Wake off. Now it almost works correctly. My phone enters Standby, dims to red, and then turns off. Touching the screen turns the display back on again in dim red, and it stays on all night.

Except for having to turn the screen back on I’m satisfied.

I have a case open with Apple, so I’ll keep asking about the odd behavior.

Turning Motion to Wake on does not seem to do anything. The Phone will not wake to a hand-wave when in Standby, but it does not affect the transition to Standby.

With ”AOD” OFF, Standby is supposed to turn on in Night Mode when motion is detected, but this has been very inconsistent. More often then not I have to tap it to wake my 15 Pro’s screen.
