Thinking of getting this game but not sure if this is story based or just customizing a character and fighting battles. It looks pretty good either way but would just like to know from anybody who's got the game.......

Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast has a much better storyline. The fighting system got an upgrade in Academy and there are more lightsaber moves and force powers, but the story is lame. All in all, I'd call JK2 a better game but Academy has some pretty unique levels too, so I'd say they complement each other nicely.

    Here are some thoughts ...
    - Dark Forces rocks, but it isn't a Jedi game, so never mind.
    - Jedi Knight has the best story of the lot (aside from the whole Dark side power struggle inconsistency thing), and has some of the best level design in any game ever. But it is PC-only, so you'd need Bootcamp.
    - Mysteries of the Sith (expansion for JK) - ditto above. 15 hour expansion to a FPS? That is more than twice as long as the average FPS these days!
    - Jedi Knight II - a worthy successor. The biggest flaw is the 'Evil Barney the Purple Dinosaur' villain ... but in terms of design, story and gameplay it is a wonderful experience that has aged very well.
    - Jedi Academy tried to take the gameplay of JKII and the choices from JK and make a new direction. And if it wasn't for the adolescent story and a couple of the characters it could have worked. There are some superb levels and some average ones. The saber combat is even better than JKII.

This game has a really special place in my heart for one reason: Multiplayer. I really love the multiplayer in this game! Lots and lots of great mods. I have so many good memories of the LAN parties we had at my house.

Both JK2 and JA have some serious flaws that make them less "right" in terms of Jedi way. KOTOR series is much better at it, but some prefer FPS over RPG...

The story in JA is really lame though. Get the game just for combat as it is the best thing in the entire series. Multiplayer is your friend.

Play Jedi Outkast for the story and gameplay and play Jedi Academy as "bonus missions". Both are practically exactly the same technology-wise, so theres no reason to get JA instead if youre worried about it being too dated, you wouldnt be able to tell the difference in graphics without side by side screenshots.

JA does have a story but its not very interesting, it came out shortly after Outcast and was meant as more of an expansion with more saber styles, probably just to cash in on the popularity of Darth Maul's light saber.
