Oh man I see we have ye 'ol Star Trek whiners on these forums too. The Tea Party of nerds.

Reality check grandpas, JJ Abram's Star Trek took a dead franchise (previous 2 films flopped a decade earlier and the last TV series was cancelled after its second season) and transformed it into a critical and commercial blockbuster. Trek '09 is the best reviewed film of the entire movie series (95% on RT) and the most successful up to that point. The sequel, while not as strong but still well regarded (87% RT), made close to half a billion dollars. Get over yourselves, and the irrelevant bubble you live in.

In reality Star Wars 7 has a good shot at greatness. Because Abrams is a great director. But hey, random posters at an internet forum know so much more about good directors than say, Steven Speilberg, who's a fan Abram's work.

This is why I rarely contribute to Internet forums. It's the bottom feeding ghetto of the internet.

ST '09 may be a good movie, but it is not really Star Trek as Roddenberry originally envisioned it. The whole franchise drifted away from his vision as early as the final years of TNG.

Box office predictions for this movie?

I predict that it will make more money that the forth coming Steve Jobs movie with Magneto a.k.a Michael Fassbender!

It should literally make a Billion dollars unless it is really, really, really, really bad! With J. J. Abrams you never know! Giving J. J. Abrams the reigns to both Star Trek and Star Wars is too much power for one man! There are other Directors out there! LucasFilm is part of Disney now too! But lets see how it comes out? :(

EDIT: One thing I hate about the new star treks is that Kirk is a womanizer. The original Kirk wasn't a womanizer. He frequently had romantic interests, but wasn't a sleep with her and leave her type of guy like Chris Pine's Kirk.

Isn't that a deliberate character point? In that the new timeline killed Kirk's father, making him more a rebel without a cause, womanising, bar fights, all until Pike's "I dare you to do better" speech hooks him?

JJ Abrams work is recognizeable and it sucks. Though less nauseating than Michael Bay's recent flicks. Either would stain a Starwars film.

(…and the last TV series was cancelled after its second season) …
*Fourth season. Four terrible, terrible seasons. Taking Star Trek out of Rick Berman's hands was a very wise decision.

As Star Trek fan, I really liked the new films, although I still think that the best movies of that franchise still were with the classic crew.

I'm definitely not looking forward to Episode VII because of how bad JJ Abrams butchered Star Trek.

I just have that feeling that Episode VII will be nothing more than a nostalgia driven wet dream for those who still cling onto their childhood memories of IV, V, and VI.

I'll probably watch the trailer(s) but I'm definitely not paying to see this in the theater.

Before anyone says anything, I used to be a huge Star Wars fan. I own all the movies and lots of memorabilia. I even got into the expanded universe and enjoyed much of that content, I really like the Clone Wars animated series. But over time, the original trilogy just doesn't stand the test of time with me. I can't stand watching Episode IV these days and having to endure its slow pace and whiny characters.

Just to slightly balance some of the cynicism, I for one love all the Star Wars films and plenty of the books/TV series etc and am looking forward to The Force Awakens a lot, and am super-excited to see the first new motion picture Star Wars footage since 2005, tomorrow!

Based on my enjoyment of most of his other work I have no doubt JJ Abrams will make at least good film, hopefully a great one.

the movie features actors like Andy Serkis, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong'o, and Oscar Issac

Who? Never heard of any of them.

Hope this means they're finally going to add the first 6 films on to the iTunes Film Store.

Who cares? Everything evolves. Humans evolve. Art evolve. Tastes evolve. Culture evolves.

Yeah, everything changes, and not always for the better.

Like I already said, if you like JJA's Star Trek movies then good for you, they can stand on their own as movies. Just don't get the idea that they are Star Trek as Roddenberry envisioned it.

I'll say this much, ST '09 was closer to Star Trek than some of the later TV series. Not bad for someone who claims he isn't even a fan of Star Trek!

The problem I have with them is the ridiculous caricatures of the original characters. They were bad enough in TOS, why make them even worse?

So, is Luke Skywalker going to be a whiny nitwit at 50 years old?

JJ doesn't really matter, though. Lucas destroyed his own baby years ago.

I do think Disney isn't delusional enough to be unaware of how hated the market shift to toddlers was with prequel episodes 1,2&3, and having just spent their billions buying the franchise, they must know how high the stakes are with this film, and wouldn't allow Abrams to take the same approach with Star Wars as he did with Star Trek.

JJ injected a good dose of suckery into the Star Trek franchise.

I'm sure he'll FUBAR Star Wars just as well.
George Lucas took care of that with the last 3 films.

As for Star Trek, while he certainly changed its feel to some degree, given where the more recent movies and shows were going it's hard to say that messed it up given that it wasn't really going anywhere just prior to it.

Who? Never heard of any of them.

Serkis: Lord of the Rings and the recent Planet of the Apes movies (Gollum and Caesar, respectively)
Driver: Frances Ha, Lincoln, Inside Llewyn Davis, Girls (the TV show)
Gleeson: True Grit and one of the Weasleys in Harry Potter
Christie: Brienne from Game of Thrones
Nyong'o: 12 Years a Slave (got an Oscar)
Isaac: Llewyn Davis in Inside Llewyn Davis

Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher were far less known when they starred in the first Star Wars.
