Starbucks has added Passbook support to its iPhone app [App Store], as perhaps the highest profile app to embrace the feature. Starbucks customers can use its app to store gift cards and use QR codes on the phone to quickly pay for food and drinks without needing cash or credit cards. Additionally, the company keeps track of purchases for its rewards program.

It's a near perfect use of Passbook; presumably why Starbucks is prominently featured in Apple's marketing. Passbook is designed to get users directly into gift cards or event tickets from the lock screen, using time and location information to discover when a user is near a Starbucks and put a link to the Starbucks gift card directly on the lock screen.

The Starbucks app is a free download on the App Store. [Direct Link]

Other apps using Passbook include Ticketmaster, Fandango, American Airlines, United Airlines, Lufthansa, Major League Baseball, Eventbrite, and McDonalds (as a limited test in France).

Thanks Will!

I noticed this right after it came out.

I didn't turn on the location feature, though. Something tells me that if my phone is checking if I'm at a Starbucks 24/7 it won't exactly extend battery life. ;)

Besides, only takes 3 seconds to get to Passbook.

To make it perfect.... NFC? :D

You're welcome! It was a nice surprise during the debates... :)

I guess afterwards I'll have to make a trip to Starbucks just to put this thing to the test...

Updated to support Passbook and iOS 6, but not iPhone 5?

Yeah... Where's my iPhone 5 support? Also, it's somewhat annoying how the Starbucks app (when on the card screen) and Passbook jack the brightness on the screen all the way up. This seems new with this app update. I've never had problems with it scanning before...

I guess I don't quite get Passbook. I have the Starbucks app, updated it, launched it, and added my Starbucks card to Passbook, and even added my "favorite" stores to the app, so it know, but when I launch Passbook, I don't see my Starbucks card, balance info, etc. Nothing. Do I have to be in a Starbucks for it to show up in the Passbook app like a cool little wallet card, or has it just not updated yet?

Is it me or does the Starbucks Canada app (also updated today) still not support this?

Go into the settings in the Starbucks app and add the card to your passbook.

Finally!

Being as I fly maybe once a year and don't use fandango, it's nice to be able to use this feature! I bought a $10 starbucks card just to try it out.

I used Passbook with Fandango and it was seamless. Target app also supports it for coupons. So much better idea than carrying coupons with you.

I don't have that option in settings. I got the popup asking me if I wanted to add my card to Passbook but after I tapped yes I also don't see anything in Passbook. I gotta say, Passbook is very disappointing compared to how they demo'd it at WWDC. I thought we would be able to scan our store cards and all the necessary info would automatically be imported. Oh we'll, I just hope it gets better.

Finally! Definitely going to Starbucks tomorrow! Now we need more support for Passbook, preferably without an app per pass. It's been weird to me how every time I go on my phone I have 5 updates for the larger screen, but next to none with Passbook support.
