“… at this point…”
Technically, at that point (in the sentence), you’d heard of it.

I mean, if you’re going to pick nits… 😜

Speaking of, we normally say "gonna nit pick" in our part of the world, not "gonna pick nits". 👏 😜 Now if only there was a game called Gone Nit Picking..... I'm a genius! I own that! You heard it here first!

I played Stardew Valley on my Switch. I don’t think I could get through the mines and caves very well on my phone.

When I first saw Ted Lasso I thought he looked just like Harvey (the doctor, a bachelor that your character can marry).

I didn’t quite finish. I went back to Animal Crossing.

The most astonishing part about the whole article is that “most people have heard of Stardew Valley at this point…”

Seems I am not most people
Well you’re definitely not most people. That’s what most means: a majority. You should play it though if you’re into video games at all. I thought it sounded dumb, had a dumb name and was just a farming sim with outdated graphics. I could never have been more wrong or more happy to be wrong.

This is somehow among the deepest and most charming games I’ve ever played. And there is a lot of action and adventure and leveling up in dungeon mines and lots of mysterious secrets to unravel and new lands to discover and explore. My wife isn’t much of a gamer and it’s her favorite game. Together we’ve played hundreds of hours in this game since it first came out many years ago. We usually play it during long, cold, dark winters as the dev updates it with new content every year and there are different ways to play and different paths you can take and different starting farms. There is also a vibrant modding community if you want to play on the computer.

The best part is all of it was just made by one guy. The art, the gameplay, the character design, the dialogue, the music, the programming. Just one guy. That’s what impressed me. He has since hired a team to do ports to different platforms and help on updates as he works on his second game, Haunted Chocolatier. Guy is basically a genius tier jack of all trades master of all. It defies logic and common sense. I’m a similar type of person but I strive to get on his freaking level of freakishness.

I have never heard of the game either, but might give it a try. Is it coming to tvOS?

I think Apple Arcade is worth the money, but people need to keep expectations in check. There are good games, but mostly bubblegum games that get stale quickly. People expecting a library of modern AAA games will most likely be disappointed. At least, that is my perspective, but keep in mind that I only play on the Apple TV, as I hate playing games on my phone. Maybe there are better games on the iPhone and iPad.

There are a few games that stand out, though.

Anyone new to Apple Arcade and likes Zelda games, try Oceanhorn 2. Probably the closest to a AAA game on Apple Arcade. Huge, open world, decent graphics (looks beautiful on the ATV4K, and 60fps), and has a great story. It isn't difficult, and I probably died more from falling than fighting. Not even sure if I ever died from fighting, tbh.

I love that more games are coming to Apple Arcade. But these type of games were made for farming peoples time and money.

Making this a free game is awesome, but I would rather have new games that wasn’t build on the premise of wheeling money.

I hate Freemium games, and this is just that, but now with time farming only…..

All of these games suck 😭

stardew valley is an all-time best seller across multiple platforms. it's not an apple arcade random freebie, it's a full featured heavyweight chart topper that was the #1 game the year it launched.

all of its post launch support has been free.

edit: as of 2022, it has sold 20+ million copies. IIRC, the dude who made it had net somewhere around 10million or so dollars within the first 6 months of launch. 1 developer.

this is quite literally a fantastic value add on to apple arcade.

Indeed. I think that’s a difficult statement to swallow here on a technology forum, let alone in the wider world…

So MacRumors, ‘most’ - nearly all - people on Earth, have heard of this video game?

Nice to see that Apple Arcade keeps growing. I know it gets a lot of shade from “real gamers” but with over 200 titles and some fun gems in there it’s a great value for the money.

I enjoy it and I regularly try out a new game. Never played Slay the Spire or Stardew Valley but heard of them so will try these out

You must be confusing Stardew Valley with another game or I am misunderstanding, because it was never like any of those Facebook-Farming-Games. It's like Harvest Moon, but better. Classic Gameboy stuff.

So Apple continues its trend of bringing "retro" games to its bleeding edge platforms. Nice! Can't wait for Red Dead Redemption II!

If Apple really wants to make Apple Arcade shine... they'd invest some money to bring back MacOS 9 and MacOS 8 classic hits:

Dark Castle / Return to Dark Castle (this is OG Macintosh as it gets)

Escape Velocity (Nova)

Bungie's Marathon series

Ambrosia Software's other shareware hits: Apeiron, Maelstrom, etc

Spaceward Ho!

LittleWing (Japanese developer) Pinball games

Old InterPlay-MacPlay horror and noir hits: Alone in the Dark, Flashback, etc.

These kinds of games need only a bit of work to be revamped (modernized for this century), and the hardware (CPU and GPU) demands are pretty low.

I tried Apple Arcade last year I think with my friend, so we were looking for coop games and it was honestly just a **** show. The games we tried either didn't work or were so grindy (the Star Wars Lego one) and devoid of story content that it felt insulting. I was actually shocked how bad of a product Apple is offering there.
Interesting to see that your experience is so different! And I agree that the newly announced titles look much more promising to me.

Stardew Valley is one of the best games ever made.

I’m happy that it gets another release for more people to enjoy so that developer ConcernedApe (Eric Barone) - who made this game and all of its art and music on his own - can finance his next game.

Barone’s fantastic. I’ll play anything he makes, based on Stardew alone.

I hope there is controller support. The non-Arcade version says the last update had “Gamepad support improvements” but the store page doesn’t show controllers supported.

The normal version had gamepad support, but was definitely in need of those gamepad support improvements - gamepads were very janky. I'll have to see how how much they improved it when I get home.

I can't imagine the arcade version will be any different to the normal version.

You can already get the full game on iOS and Steam. No need for a stinking subscription.

Hot tip: you can transfer the save file between Steam and your iOS device using Finder, so you can continue playing on both. This also opens up the possibility of using save-file hacking to cheat a little.

Yeah. I did know the board game variant and switch variant. And that’s about it.
All of these games suck 😭
Don’t expect AAA come to Mac unless Apple brings powerful x86 emulation on the table. Those companies ain’t gonna spend money on a platform that has virtually no users. No, hardware alone is NOT enough.
