Starring and Hearting Songs

Like a lot of you I rely on ratings for smart playlists that I have created over the years (i.e. songs that I have rated highly but haven't listened to in a while). From what I can tell song ratings/hearts only sync to the cloud and across devices if the songs are added to your library. Has this been your experience as well? I tried rating a few songs without adding them to my library and it appears that the ratings just disappeared.

Yeah I found this really annoying. If I hear a song I like and haven't heard the artist before I like to add it to a 'songs to check out' playlist so I can find the artists full album later. No option to do that, you add to music, then add to playlist, would rather be able to do it in a couple of taps.
