    The Apple site says....

Wow, one second? So you hit the start button and one second later your desktop appears? Do I understand this correctly?

No. I don't understand the 1 second claim, perhaps it's something other than a cold power on. When I power on my 2013 MBA it takes 10 seconds to see the login prompt.

It likely refers to waking from sleep, which is accurate.

I believe its from a sleeping state, and not from a cold boot.

Exactly. When the MBA is awakened from 'sleep' mode, it takes around one second for it to become awake, alive, and wonderfully alert.

A cold boot takes a bit longer, the best part of maybe 30 seconds.

Does yours really take that long? You got me wondering, so I just shut my 2013 MBA down and started it back up. Took 11 seconds from the time I pressed the power button until the login prompt appeared. Takes a few more seconds to enter my username and password and show the desktop of course.

    Ok, I see now, thanks.

I just tested my five year old MacBook, and it takes 3 seconds to awake from sleep.

Ya, it takes a second from Sleep mode. From a system power on 13~ seconds for me.

Cold start in 1 second, even if it can be accomplished, would NOT be desirable.

Believe it not, even solid states electronics don't like to be shocked.

How are you people getting such fast boot times? It takes about 30 seconds for Mavericks to boot for me. Black Magic is showing 411MBps read and 200MBps write for my drive. Waking from sleep is instant.

I'm going with "not". Do you have any info to back this up?

You might wanna get your MBA checked out. 30 seconds is way too long. Mine took exactly 13 seconds for a regular cold boot and 24 seconds for a cold boot and reopening all apps that were open. (word, excel, iTunes, mail, safari)

Um, no. I have a 2010 13" Air that boots in 13 seconds. Blackmagic lists its read and write speeds at less than 200mb/s. Anything longer than 15 seconds on an SSD probably means a software problem. I'd run Onyx (the automated tab with most options checked) and try again. Boot speeds will likely dramatically improve.

It seems that I am guilty of both a lack of precision, and a surfeit of impatience.

Actually, I am not certain that my MBA took 30 seconds to boot from cold; it just felt like it……..granted, I never actually timed it, but I shall make it a point to do so, the next time I boot from start up…...
