So ive googled this extensively and have not found a solution that actually works, and I've been on the phone with apple so I'm trying my luck here...

I have a mid 2008 MBP 2.5ghz with 4 gb ram. After pressing power, the follow applies:

1. The lid light turns on and reacts to the lid being opened or closed.
2. The screen is black and does NOT reach the first chime.
3. I can hear the DVD drive spin like once and then cut off.

I have tried resetting smc and pram to no avail.

It did randomly turn on and lasted for about an hour, but when I accidentally closed the screen it died again and is back in this same state... I'm willing to go get it serviced but not if there is a solution that someone knows about.

Doesn't sound to good.. It basically doesn't even boot up the "bios"?

Maybe open it up remove tha RAM and put it back in, disconnect the hdd..

See if it fixes anything

My uneducated guess (it-expert, macs not so much) is that your logic board (mainboard) is broken.. :(

It sounds like a faulty logic board to me. Your best bet would be to have it serviced at an Apple Store or by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Is this possible if it occasionally starts up?
