Apparently, at one time, if you drop a QuickTime .mov into the classic Mac OS System Folder, the Mac should show them movie while booting.

I can't seem to get it to work on OS 9.2.2 or OS 8.6, has anyone ever done this?

I don't know if the feature was removed, or I just don't have my .mov file in the correct format. I created it in iMovie2 on OS 9 and exported it as Web with Quicktime 3 Compatibility.

The .mov file plays fine on OS 9 under Quicktime 5, however doesn't playback correct on OS 8.6 with QT3.x or QT5.x.

Thanks, but not the same thing, should be able to play at Startup, before the desktop loads.

One would assume it would need to be a self contained .mov, but who knows what format and what version of Quicktime is need to make this work.
Huh, interesting. I've never heard of that feature, but that by no means indicates it doesn't exist :D

I do remember this. And if I recall correctly, a still StartupScreen image must be PICT resource data, so maybe the QuickTime movie needs to be QMOV resource data (copied into the resource fork via ResEdit)?

I went digging through one of my favourite old Mac mags on the Archive.. here:

Ignore my ideas of resource forks above. We just needed to get the name right. It is "Startup Movie" (with a space).

I tried on my Blueberry using the Sample Movie found in the Quicktime Folder, but now I am seeing an error about QuickTime PowerPlug at startup, so I had to reboot with Extensions Disabled and remove the movie file to get back to normal operation.

Maybe there is something specific about the movie format?
