Who carries an iPhone without a case? Ok, well I don't because it's too expensive and/or a hassle to replace even with AppleCare. Based on this ad you must place your phone directly against the door's receiver. This means I'm required to pry out my phone each time I enter the room and that's in itself kills the convenience.

I am waiting for the day when they make doors that will recognize a guest in such a way that the guest will simple be ported through the door without opening the door, pulling anything out of his pocket, etc. Until that day comes I can't be bothered with using my iPhone to bypass the front desk and not have to deal with those useless key readers.

Bluetooth will transmit thru your case. No need to take it out of the case.

Did you not watch or read the ad? Apparently, there is something else involved in the validation process, or at least based on the ad. If it doesn't require direct contact then maybe they should re-work the add showing at least one iPhone in an Apple case or similar.

So when a woman in the bar wants you to 'drop by her room later' now she has to give you her iPhone? Huh.

NFC isn't usable from an iPhone for this purpose.

Only a fraction of iPhone's even have NFC. However; MANY dating way back to the iPhone 4S have BTLE.

Additionally, BTLE is very low power, coincell battery can power a transceiver for over a year, it's the ideal low power technology to embed in door locks and small devices like this.

Yeah, understood. I just thought that Apple is planning to allow people to us the Apple Watch to pair with a 5, 5S, and 4 to do Apple Pay. So likewise, they can do it to open hotel doors.

Oh well. Time to book a room at one of those 10 hotels in the world and try it out. hah.

----------

Wouldnt the hotel key card be faster than fussing around with bt?

Most people can locate their phone much easier than a small card. At least with me, being a guy, I would normally just have the phone in my front pocket, but i may have my key card in my wallet or front jacket pocket, or not have it all (may have left it in the hotel room).

I think if this is an additional method to unlocking doors (and not replacing the current), it would be great.

Are you basing your assumptions of the technical capabilities of BTLE - or this specific lock - on whether or not the iPhones in the commercial are shown with cases? The iPhones are shown without cases because that's what Apple wants, and what Apple paid for. Product placement doesn't only happen in movies and TV shows.

This is why Passbook integration would be helpful. Pull out your phone, and the Hotel's app would have a notification on your lock screen. Just swipe and there's your key.

To access the rewards card for the local movie theater chain (Marcus, for anyone who cares), I have to unlock the phone, open their app, select the rewards card, then give it a tap to reveal the QR code to show the cashier. In an AMC theater, it's just a swipe, and I'm done.

PASSBOOK!

And you my friend appear to be making your own 'assumptions' that Apple had something to do with the ad. My assessment is based on my observations contained in the ad and nothing more. If you're correct, then it seems like a missed opportunity to not have plugged one of their iPhone cases in at least one of those clips.

Would Apple ever let their products be used in an ad without haveing something to do with how the ad is created? Don't be so dense.

If I make a comment about this story sort of being a generic, platform-agnostic tech story and therefore misplaced on MacRumors -- let alone its Front Page -- will that comment be more or less relevant to this thread than the angry responses from people saying "So what, it's still interesting to a lot of people!" and "Shut up and just scroll past if you don't like it!" and "Go complain to an admin, not here!" ?

That's so ridiculous....

Although, bypassing the front desk is good..

holding a big phone up to the door"as" your opening it is not....

Gimme a manual key any-day, which is allot smaller...... I would also settle for a usb dongle. (oh they are already hacked..)

May be better, but i'd feel like a complete dork holding a mobile in one hand up against a door...

Payment systems however are a different story.... because u'r in a store...

However, if your the only one doing it,, well... ya....... i'd be laughing.

FYI...I finally got my phone ot register on the app. But not without some digging into info. You have to have your notifications turned on. Would be good if the app told you this instead of just returning some random descriptionless error telling me to come back again later. ;)

Geez America is so advanced.

If it's bluetooth you probably don't even have to take your phone out of your pocket.

Many, many people use phones without a case. And i am not sure what sort of case you have, but I can only imagine that bluetooth would penetrate any material that cases could be made out of (maybe not thick lead or concrete - so avoid those cases).

This article is from 2 weeks ago so I guess all the hotels are on the same technology cycle regardless of country, eh?

You are probably right. I just wish Mac rum wasn't so America-centric. I couldn't give a toss about AT&T. In the same way you guys wouldn't care about "telstra".

So they have a "global" editor.
