This is what I said after watching 4 episodes:
Generally speaking is not the type of story telling I prefer. This post apocalyptic show about the aftermath of a world wide killer flu is slow with (so far 4 episodes) almost total focus on the experience of the character, a lot of situational pressure and the emotions of the world is falling apart, with a bit too much past life for at least one of the characters. It is still interesting to watch the transistion into this new life for the primary character, but imo for more than one character it approaches overkill, unless this is what the story wants to be about.

Of note, in contrast to the other post apocalyptic shows I’ve watched, the setting is eerily serene vs general conflict, although they are not in the city and the main character always walks around equipped with a knife ready for trouble. It appears that the vast majority of people died in the pandemic.

With 10 episodes, in episode 3 an event takes place with a stranger, someone known as the Prophet, that becones serious in episode 4. As far as I’ve gotten, this seems to be a growing conflict something other than watching the post apocalyptic lives of “the traveling symphony”. So I like the portrayal and the atmosphere and because it is mini-series I can make it though and see if this becomes noteworthy.

After finishing the Mini-series, this is what I say:
This is a pretty amazing work of art and I base this on some significant Caveats:
  • If you can become vested in a story set in a post-apocalyptic future, NOT based on conflict, although there is conflict.
  • But mostly focused on human relationships, emotions, ties, and the best of how human beings treat one another, while having flaws.
  • And if you don't mind the story jumping around almost continuously over a 20 year period (eventually all the blanks are filled in).
You just might finish this emotionally impressed by the quality and the premise of this story. We turned it off after, knowing we saw something special, but I really don't expect many of the viewers who want action and conflict to appreciate this kind of a story. If you want the Post Man, Mad Max Fury Road, or Water World, you will be disappointed. Hell it took me 5 episodes to acclimate, note Episode 5 was really excellent. :)

I'm really glad you liked it. Based on your original post, I thought you were going to be in the camp that found it dull and boring considering the genre but you 'got it'. Frankly I was quite mesmerized by it and thought it was beautifully done with a perfect ending. I think it's better than the book (so far) which is seeming to underplay the relationship between young Kiersten and Jeevan. I'm 32% into the book and that storyline hasn't even started. This is definitely a series I will watch again. I'm sure there's stuff I missed.

I feel like they cut some stuff off from the book and the way they cut short the big fight, I laughed as if they were poking post-apocalyptic action junky fans in the eye with a stick. Yes, there is conflict, but we are not going to indulge you. This was evident in other scenes when the camera looks away. :D

Spoiler follows:

What did feel disjointed to me was kids who disappear from their settlement then return with suicide vests. Yes, the prophesy, not saying it could not happen, but it did not feel right to me. Along with a puzzlement after friends were murdered, why Kristen did not follow through with her threat to kill the Prophet. I understand his anger from childhood, and I suppose when she looked into his eyes with a knife at his throat, she saw something redeemable.

Possible topic for discussion:
Does this story go soft on conflict? Conflict is referenced, but it is mostly pushed aside to focus on humanity who works together to survive. But I have no doubt in real life we would see war lords arise, think Postman or Mad Max Fury Road, which I have a hankering to watch again.

It does, and I'm actually glad about that. This was not the typical post-apocalypse show - I kept waiting for the Governor or Neegan to show up! One thing I will say - that birth scene caught me WAY off guard.

I think we can assume there was plenty of conflict within that world but was it necessary to show it for the story being told? There were certainly some violent moments that served the story but I think showing violence just because we know it exists would have been gratuitous. The major conflict certainly could have ended very violently - The Prophet was a Big Bad who ultimately made a different decision. If this world ever gets explored more via a sequel to the book or show, I could see the darker side of existence being tapped into more. It would be unavoidable but also likely won’t happen. I’m sure this is a one and done book/show.

I assume that was CGI’d, not that it makes much difference. :)

Honestly when Kirsten with just a knife was surrounded by 5 guys I wanted to see it. From what we did see, she was a bad ass with a knife. :)

I finished the book a little while ago. Contrary to my usual opinion of book vs. movie/show, I thought the series was a lot better than the source material. The book was good and the author writes well, but for me it didn't have the emotional pull of the series. The Kirsten/Jeevan relationship was non-existent (in the book she spends the aftermath of the flu with a brother that didn't exist in the show and we learned almost nothing of that story) and the ending was completely different. It was kind of disappointing actually although I'll likely check out some of her other books because she is quite a good writer I think.

I have to do a rewatch of this soon. The show had so many more layers than the book and I'll likely enjoy seeing it again. Sometimes the second is better than the first.

This happens every so often when the screenplay ends up better than the original story. I might eventually produce a title as another example. :)

Watched for the second time. I‘ve watch a lot of post-apocalypse stories, and among the many, this has to be the best with caveats, it’s slow, if you don’t mind a story where multiple threads and timeline segments are woven and tied together, but imo it has great dynamics, the actor and the artist, some conflict and death, the Profit vs the Museum of Civilization, but this is minimized (aggravatingly so*) in favor of forging a narrative solidly based on character relationships and at the end, you just might feel you witnessed something special and emotional based on humanity and the good that can be found in us.

* I really wanted to see Kristen vs the Banditos. They give you a taste and then yank it away.
