where i work, security can be quite odd!
our store is located ina shopping centre, so most of the year we just have to use the center security if anything happens, as we have a radio. However, over the xmas season we got our own security guard. This security guard recently put someone through a table after pulling out a metal pole on our technology staff asking for mobile phones!

Then, at the same time, after we caught a couple stealing baby clothes, we got them, interviewed them, and then they just got released and barred from the store.

Then, again, when we got people stealing on cctv, they got caught by the police!

Another theif got chased and pulled a knife out!

things really seem to vary depending on who catches them and what theyre stealing. A bunch of kids once sprayed orange soda (for you americans ;)) all over some stock and they had to pay for every penny of stock which got even the slightest bit of orange on it.

The manager has said we, as shopfloor staff cant chase people, but subtley hinted towards the fact that we could if we wanted, but itd be at our own risk. There is a £20 reward in catching theifs though, so its worth it haha :p

I was at the Apple store a few days ago and thought to myself about how easy it would be to steal from... Of course I didn't actually take anything but it just looked too easy.

I thought the same thing about the Magic Mouse the last time I was in. £55 just sitting there is a tiny package, just a good enough size to put in a pocket without a noticeable bulge. And no security tags...

I'm not talking about the display ones that are set out to be used - I'm talking about the full on sealed ones that can be picked up to be bought. The packaging is only a fraction larger in size than the mouse itself. Easily pocketable.

Well, the simple fact is that store employees are just that; store employees. They can't arrest you. If they even put a hand on you, that could be assault.

It's not a matter of management telling employees not to do anything, they just legally can't do anything. You haven't stolen anything while you are in their store.

Now, if they have a security guard or whatever, then they can stop you and apprehend you.

Ummm...that's not how I understand the law. AFAIK, every U.S. citizen possessed the common-law power of arrest. You have to arrest someone who is a) committing at that moment b) a genuine crime. Mind you, you can get sued if you screw up. Security guards don't have any more (or less) arrest power than average citizens; they're just (supposedly) trained, (usually) issued uniforms and (occasionally) licensed to use the old Nine-Millimeter Power of Persuasion.

However, laws on this may vary from state to state (and for all I know, they may have changed that whole citizens-arrest thing). Always check your local statutes before committing any malfeasance. Anybody who plays poker without knowing the house rules is a sucker.

people steal groceries because they are hungry,
and they don't have money.
what is wrong with this situation?

also:
If you are an employee for a company, why say anything if you see someone stealing? You're getting paid by the hour, and the company is banking from exploiting yer ass. What u want, a medal????????

But you're really kidding, right?
