I genuinely believe that the Steam Machine was kneecapped by the present market conditions and their own hardware scale (i.e. tiny) but that the core idea is excellent. I owned a Deck but I don’t mobile game and I didn’t appreciate the compromises to set it up as a console. I imagine using this as a console replacement so any updates on how you find it to use as a console, whether positives, negatives, or just niggles are absolutely appreciated.

Have fun!

Thanks! My Steam Machine has arrived!

Sadly, we're going to a relative's funeral tonight and I have work tomorrow so it'll need to wait until the weekend.

Finally had time to set up the Steam Machine. The setup was fairly simple once my 32” 1080p TV actually recognized the HDMI signal. Not really blaming the Steam Machine as this TV has very finicky HDMI and has had issues connecting to my PS4, PS5, Switch 2 (official dock) and Steam Deck (3rd party dock).

I used the 1TB USB SATA3 SSD already filled with games from my SteamOS Beelink Mini-PC and it was instantly recognized by the Steam Machine so I could go straight to playing. Played some FF7 Rebirth and it actually ran smoother than my RTX 5060 Windows laptop using the same settings (1080p medium - FSR quality). FF7 Rebirth just stuttered a lot more on Windows. The machine was very quiet, too. I didn’t monitor how hot the temps got but the chassis and air exhaust were barely warm.

So far, the Steam Machine has met my expectations and I’m quite satisfied with it.

Hopefully, FF7 Revelation won’t be too taxing on the SM. Considering it’s a simultaneous release on PS5, Switch 2 and Steam, I’m cautiously optimistic that it will have similar system requirements as Rebirth.
